I believe the gods show us things, not always for our own benefit, but that doesn't mean we can't learn from those things. The gods are also mysterious and powerful, yet limited. I think each of us has a piece of who they are in some fashion. We all experience different parts of them through our relationships. Whether yours and mine are positive doesn't make a difference. I think they can come to anybody, for any reason, maybe it's to help you, maybe it isn't. Either way I think what's important in your practice is your passion. The passion you feel allows you to do what you do, and that in and of itself is a beautiful thing.

I think like everyone, I was searching for something when I did trance. I wanted some kind of truth or thing that showed me things were real. At the same time. I needed guidance of how to do things because while I think consciously I didn't know it, I was lost. Performing trance was never a bad thing until it became to often. Then, after I stopped doing it, other things happened, life things, and now I'm just at this point where I realize there is no real truth. There's just things that are, and things that are known. The real truth is, I just have to live my life in the way I think is best. Whatever that is, it's mine to do with, just as my practice is also mine. I make it all mine in the sense that I just be who I am and do what I do unless there's a reason not to. To be myself, but to be flexible.

Modern conceptions of the gods are not bad. Let's get that straight. There's just various things that can make it bad for us mentally. Such as: thinking the gods are going to smite you, having other worshipers tell you if you can't do godphone then it will fill you with impeding doom, using other cultures practices to fill in the gaps of the information we lack, racism, and freaking out so bad about the gods that you think Odin is sniffing your underwear.

Now, clearly there is a lot more to it all than this, it's just a few examples of how modern conceptions can be bad. The fact is. Nothing we do is ancient. So somewhere along the way we must develop our own practices inspired by lore and history. That's fine, but what isn't cool is cultural appropriation, or causing such stress on a community that we all need to go see a therapist. That's when we gotta take a step back, analyze that, and find other ways to go about our modern practice.

Since Heathenry is a living faith of active practice, the best place is always with a good local group, a kindred of kindhearted people open to teaching you. To find a good kindred, ask around among your pagan community or attend a regional Heathen gathering, a moot. Go to a Pagan Pride Day in your area, stop in at the metaphysical shops and book stores, and look for websites and Facebook pages for nearby groups, especially those who offer teaching and community outreach or participate in larger events.
