Jane and the Master/Servant Relationship
I was reading through chapter 167 today when I noticed something interesting. I’ve written a lot about the different servants and masters on this blog before, although I usually focused on the butlers. Jane, however, did something in this chapter I hadn’t seen a servant do.
She gave her master an order.
After knocking out Ran Mao, she makes a sly comment about how she had warned Heathfield about Ran Mao and Mey-Rin.
Now, this comment is not that unusual. Sebastian would be likely to say something of the lines of this to O!Ciel, along with his signature smile of course. What Jane does next is odd though. She tells Heathfield to stay in his room because, in his current state, he is unsightly.
While she does add a ‘please’, this isn’t said as a request or a suggestion. Going back to the comparison to Sebastian, he would have said something like, “It would probably be best to stay in your room until...” Jane tells Heathfield what he is going to do, and isn’t very kind as to why. It’s almost as if she is the one giving orders.
I noticed this while working on a theory similar to that of the lovely @abybweisse, in which I was going to suggest that Heathfield wasn’t fully aware of what was going on in his household. I still think there’s a chance that is very true. He really might not know the full story.
Initially, I was just theorizing that Jane might be using Heathfield’s lust to her own advantage, but now it looks like it could be a bit more.
It’s almost as if the entire structure of the house has been flipped. The master isn’t the one running things, and he only thinks he is the one in charge. He might think he is the one using the women, and there really might be something to that whole ‘shape of the soul’ thing he keeps talking about, but it looks like his lust is being used as a cover for the number of women who are disappearing.
Look out Heathfield. I think Jane might be in charge here.
Thoughts?
