Since it's no longer the #TuesdayThrowdown, forget the #nightcap. Let's get #WhiskyWednesday off to a great start. Remember, you can't drink all day, if you don't start in the morning! Amongst the random bottles hanging out in my kitchen, I realized that I haven't heard anymore news from #Loretto about when, and now if, the #MakersMark #46 #CaskStrength is going to actually become a retail available product, or if it will continue to be small scale #distillery only. I would love to know if, you guys and gals have any insight. Tonight I'm sipping on the standard Cask strength Makers Mark. I will tell you that this bottle is from batch 15 lot 1 from last year. I was doing inventory and completely forgot it was in the closet. For those of you that have tried multiple batches I would love to know how each stacks up to the last. #MM46CS was pretty epic right out of the bottle. Just in case, Makers is 70/16/14, corn/wheat/barley on the mashbill breakdown. It's a slightly different style from #WLWeller or #HeavanHill #Wheaters. To me it's got a little bit of a youth movement going on, and the proof hides a lack of years. I am enjoying this. A little water really tames this one nicely. Now my biggest gripe about everything that is Maker's Mark. The price is ridiculous. Yes Wax tops are cool, but their entry level 90 proof, that's probably less than six years old carries a price tag that climbing over 30$ in most markets. It's a 22$ to 28$ max in my opinion but it only gets worse from there. Both of these #Pints #375ml were over 40$ with tax. That's too close for comfort to #StaggJr and #ElijahCraig #barrelproof. I know those aren't wheated bourbon, but they are delicious. Don't even get me started on 60+$ 750ML MMCS. It is a solid product though and in a time where 3yr swill from Texas is fetching over a hundred dollars. Sometimes you just want a nice pour, that's no work to pick apart. Unfortunately #HeavanHill gave #FightingCock 6yr the axe as well in favor of a NAS blend. At 103 proof this pour bring a full body, and plenty of punch. The nose is mostly caramel and butterscotch, apples and has a slight antiseptic quality that should be expected at 51.5%abv and only 6yrs old. This is comprised of 75% #corn 13% #rye and 12% #barley. The Kicking Chicken is however a quite enjoyable pour and a value proposition. There are still age stated bottles hiding it but there are getting harder to hunt down. On the palate there is spice and pepper up front. Mid way through that sweetness comes back. It has a medium body, and is slightly oily. The high corn shows through and creates a nice complexity. On the follow though the apples and pears show through, right before the heat returns to finish out. I really enjoy this one. Don't be afraid to #defendthebottomshelf. This was $14 for a 750ml and only $25 for a 1.75L it's an old school style bourbon. Another one bites the dust! I have to report with sad news that #ElijahCraig is no longer 12 years old. In an effort to keep up with demand #HeavanHill is rolling back the much beloved Ec12 to join a new crop of #NAS Non Age Statement whiskeys. They claim that it will now be a blend of 8 to 12 years. The real truth is they can blend 2yr whisky in with older and turn over their stock quicker. The Barrel Proof is currently 12 years old as well, and since it's a low volume item I really hope we don't see that one roll back as well.
