Hecatolite/Moonstone Gem Concept

Another character design, a new gem created for the show Steven Universe: Hecatolite. 

Background:

Hecatolites are high-class gems belonging to the Diamond court. They are created to be personal confidants and emotional supports for their respective Diamonds.

Because their role involves listening to some of the darkest and most tragic emotional secrets the Diamonds keep (from even each other), their gem was strategically placed over their mouths to ensure their silence. 

Held as mysterious and aloof by their gem counterparts, Hecatolites hold an incredible emotional burden that they cannot outwardly express- and are often left in solitude when not in the presence of their Diamonds or surrounded by guards. 

Because they have no way to express their own emotional needs, and no one who can hear them, one eventually lashes out with (repressed) telekinetic powers. 

Gem Powers:

All Hecatolites have crescent-shaped gems over their mouths, something that ensures the Diamonds that their darkest secrets and plans will be kept with certainty. 

Hecatolites don’t have weapons produced by their gems, but instead have varied powers linked to the mind, such as mind-reading, telekinesis, astral projection, and creating illusions. 

However, due to heavy repression from the Diamond Authority, Hecatolites are taught they do not have any special abilities-- and therefore are stifled from proper self-expression and communication. 

The shape and expression of their gem can only range from looking “happy” or “sad” since the placement and inherent shape of their gem keeps them from displaying any deeper emotion.

Fun Fact: these are members of the feldspar group of minerals.  Labradorite is often referred to as the dark sister of moonstone.
