Hydnum repandum Hedgehog mushroom; sweet tooth
Fungi are everywhere if you’re paying attention to them.
If I even have a conversation with someone about mushrooms, they’re often telling me later that they’re all over the place. They’ve never seen so many mushrooms.
Mushrooms are funny like that. Maybe we just don’t pay enough attention to them.
Still, there is a lot of winding around when it comes to mushrooming. Fungi are adapted to many environments, but I look mostly in forests. Sometimes, I end up so far from my vehicle that I have to race the sun to get back before dark.
Once in a while, something special will be waiting for me, right where I parked.
Mere steps into the treeline and there they were. About seven or so were scattered around a red oak.
There are many toothy fungi. Some are itty bitty little things. Some are crusts or polypores. Some are scaly or feathery, like pheasant feathers.
Hydnums are regarded as choice edibles. There are several species in this genus, but based on the lighter tones, the stockier stipe and flesh, the little teeth running just slightly down the stipe, and few other features, I think I got it right, identifying these as repandum.
That was a great day!
I spent the rest of my time in the forest perfectly satisfied with what I’d already found.
I’m always mesmerized by tooth fungi. It isn’t hard to see why they call these hedgehogs, is it?
It is rewarding to find variety of fungi by scavaging around. But what a nice surprise when they pop up right in front of you.
Either way, you never know what you’ll see next.
Just imagine: hegehog-sunflower. Now this is my favorite beast
Hedgehog families have become quite frequent visitors, this season, at WAF. This particular brood was actually born at the centre! ‘Mum’ was rescued by one of our volunteers after she was spotted in a garden struggling to walk. Once here, the vet team confirmed that she had a broken femur in one of her back legs. Under normal circumstances, Maru would perform an operation to pin the bones in to the correct position, to enable them to heal. However, we quickly discovered that the hog was heavily pregnant, which rendered the procedure an unviable option, as a general anaesthetic would endanger the lives of the unborn hoglets. Luckily for mum, the fragments of bone were not displaced, so we were able to move her in to one of our hutches, in the quietest area of the hospital. This would allow her to heal and give birth in peace, which is essential for the hoglets’ survival, since there is always a chance that mum will reject or, potentially, even eat her young hoglets, if the nest is disturbed whilst her babies are still very small. Thankfully, they have made it past this very cautious stage and, when the youngsters reach 6 weeks, they will all be released back in to the wild to start afresh as a brand new family! #Hegehogs #Family #growingup #spikey #prickles #rescue #pregnant #hoglets #young #mum #hogrun #cute https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz0dzhPADbE/?igshid=uitut5nmhfln

okay so here’s the thing: I’m hopefully gonna have a hedgehog in october so I was thinking about how to name it right my original choice was John Watson for obvious reasons but then one day I woke up and thought - for no particular reason - Peter Quill would be a great name, too then I went searching for the translation of quill (I’m italian and I did not know it) and now it juST SEEMS SO APPROPRIATE so my question is, how do I name it? John Watson or Peter Quill?
