“s-suguru,” you whisper, your voice coming out barely more than a rasp. a request. a beg. a plea. and for what? to make the bile in your throat stop from rising? to make your heart not thunder against your ribs like it was trying to escape?

“shh,” he coos. coos at you, and you immediately swallow, eyes fluttering close. “it’s okay, sweet bun. i’m right here.”

(but you don’t want him to be.)

warm hands cup your cheeks and you feel like throwing up, eyes still squeezed shut— as if trying to convince yourself that the sickening reality of the situation would obliterate itself if you simply didn’t look.

“look at me,” he murmurs, in that same voice again.

you want to cry and wail and scream. he knows what that tone does to you. you shake your head, tears beginning to line your eyelids, threatening to spill over any second.

“no,” you whisper.

(yet you open your eyes anyway.)

you try not to look.

try so hard not to see the way his lips twitch into a smile. that same smile which never quite changes, no matter what you do. it haunts your mind, the way the little specks of blood drip away when his lips upturn.

(and despite yourself, you reach out a hand to wipe them away.)

“there you are,” he says, “my baby.”

“suguru,” you say again, a sob escaping your parted lips, and suguru pulls you in his arms.

you want to pull away.

pull away from the endless cold his hands radiate. pull away from the way he presses his lips against your temple again. pull away from the way he feels so safe, despite the way your heart feels like it’s been stabbed with tiny little pinpricks every time you breathe in his scent.

“shh,” he coos. “i’m here.”

Ohohoho I've been sitting on this fic for awhile

“Please, I promise it’s just an unfortunate-”

“Coincidence?” you cut him off. “Bullshit!”

The word barely escaping your mouth, guilt immediately engulfs you. It’s the first time you’ve sworn in his presence – unthinkable less than twenty four hours ago. You take a moment to collect yourself.

“Forgive me for using such extreme language, sir. But my point still stands. The probability of it being a coincidence is second to null.” You wipe the nervous sweat from your brow, struggling to steady your voice to a timbre less hostile. “I only ask for the truth. I won’t go to the media. I will not tell anyone about it. But I need you to be honest with me, please. What are the Autobots? And why are you using them to make a prototype?”

The professor solemnly stands up. He clutches his hands together like a guilty child, expression grim, actively refusing to meet your eyes.

Seeing him this way makes you feel… oddly ashamed. You try to shove the feeling down, with little success.

“I hoped this day would never come,” he begins like a man marching towards his own death. Unable to stop. Unable to look back. Determined to right his wrongs.

“About fifty years ago, in the dead of night, something crashed landed next to my family’s farm. I went down to investigate only to find…” He takes a step back and motions at the head.

One of your eyes starts twitching.

“I didn’t know what to do. I was barely sixteen and staring alien technology in the face. I know I should have contacted the authorities, but I just… couldn’t. It shames me to say it, but I’ve been reverse-engineering their technology for fifty years. Without it… Sumdac Systems may have never existed. At least not at this scale.” He taps his fingers together, looking down at his feet, anxiously avoiding your gaze. “I’m sorry.”
