Helaena x knight m!reader
Reader is suppose to be like Dunk but that didn’t come through very well, reader is the twins pseudo dad, mention of blood and cheese, death, sex mentioned, reader is Helaena’s personal knight, pregnancy, etc
Reader who is about two years older than Helaena, being assigned to be her protected when you were 17 and she 15
She was stand offish at first but when you started showing interest in her bugs or actually listened to her dreams she grew to be attached to you
She would show you spiders or centipedes she found, happy to see you like what she does
She would also bring you to meet Dreamfyre who seeing how she cared for you also grow to love you
You would often scare Aegon off from bothering the princess when he had too much to drink, the boy not wanting to get too close to his sister-wife’s sworn protector
It had gotten to the point that Ser Criston Cole and the King’s Hand would have you removed on nights the Prince was drinking heavily to ensure he could spend the night with his wife
You didn’t realize their plans until Helaena had fallen pregnant with the twins, making you even more worried about her than before
When you found out you had raged at the lord commander saying that it was your duty to protect the princess from any harm, the prince being her husband doesn’t mean he gets a free pass to harm her
The kings hand and lord commander had threatened to have you removed from the castle which you couldn’t do to Helaena, couldn’t make her go through pregnancy alone
You would often support here when the babies started being too heavy for her, holding her up when she wanted to fall down
Her dreams got worse during the pregnancy so she asked that you stayed beside her bed to ensure nothing would happen to her in the night, which you were more than willing to do
She would wake up breathless and explain what she saw, murmurs of “Red, Green. Eyeless lions and wolves killing dragons. The ocean on fire.”
You couldn’t make sense of it at all but you could provide her with the support she needed in that moment to know she wasn’t fighting the nightmares alone
One night the pain of the babies kicking her was terrible, she couldn’t sleep at all and needed a distraction having you read her books about different bugs to her
Or one night after you had read everything you could, trying to distract her before telling her stories of your childhood and singing lullabies from then
That night was one of the first in a long time with no pain and no dreams
This happened almost every night with Helaena’s maids getting used to seeing you asleep on a chair in her room when they came to dress her for the day
Everyone in the castle knew how close the two of you were making some people suspect Helaena’s children to be yours which you would deny through and through saying you were only her guard
When the babes were born you weren’t allowed in the same wing of the castle, her screams and cries of anguish making you feel like you failed her
You had tears falling down your face the whole time you could hear her, the guards and maids around you feeling a tinge of pity for you
You weren’t allowed to see Helaena for a week after her birth and even then you were stationed outside her door as her mother took care of her and her children
One day Queen Alicent had stepped out of the room with a heavy sigh before turning to you saying “she calls for you” before she went back in, you following close behind
You smiled sadly at the princess laying in the bed coming to her first before the children wanting to ensure she was safe and healthy before meeting the two new little things you were to protect
The twins were sweet and demanded to be held all the time having grown used to your soft spine when it came to them
You would often braid their long white hair for them while they told you about any and everything that happened that day, from lord Lannister tripping to a beetle they saw in the courtyard
Jaehaerys was being raised to be the next king by Aegon while little Jaehaera would play tea parties or princess and the dragon with you having you play her defender each time
Jaehaera would paint your face with the rouge and other beauty supplies used by the women of the court, making you walk around with the mess for the rest of the day
You’d grown to view the two as your own after awhile, then finding you and dragging you into their antics often
You had helped teach them how to walk, were there for their first words, watched as they grew closer to their dragons and gained personalities of their own
That’s part of the reason the murder of Jaehaerys had broken you so thoroughly
You weren’t stationed at Helaena’s door, something that almost never happened as you were helping another guard with something
You returned to the hallway that housed the children finding maids with tears falling from their cheeks and holding bloody sheets
You sprint pants them into the room seeing the carnage, seeing Jaehaerys’ body lay in his bed
You fell to your knees sobbing, you failed again you didn’t protect him when he needed you
You searched the room looking for a sign of the little girl who shared the room with her brother, you called out “where is princess Jaehaera?”
The maids informed you that she was with her mother in the Dowager Queen’s chambers
You began to make your way towards the room when another guard stopped you saying the king wanted to see you in the council room
You nodded switching course to come face to face with king Aegon II
The boy was screaming and throwing things when you entered, his anger finding a new target in you
“WHERE WERE YOU?! YOU WERE ASSIGNED TO PROTECT MY CHILDREN AND YOU HAVE FAILED! MY SON IS-MY Son is dead-! Because you were not there!”
His voice was breaking by the end, the pain he was feeling soaking into everyone in the room
You kept your head down and let him berate you, screaming, “WHERE WERE YOU?! WHERE WERE YOU WHILE MY SON WAS BEING KILLED?!”
“I was pulled away by another guard, my king. It is no excuse for leaving the Queen and your children unguarded.”
The king’s hand had quickly excused you which you took as your chance to find Helaena and her daughter
You found them in Queen Alicent’s room, Helaena curled protectively around Jaehaera
She looked up at you with large confused eyes when you entered, you squatted in front of her before gathering the two girls in your arms
Helaena broke after that and let the sobs wreck her body entirely, you held her protectively as the fear left her body
She fell asleep in your arms that night the mourning of her son sinking into your bones from hers
The day after Ser Otto had prepared a tour for the queens to let the people of Westeros see what Rhaenyra had done to the young boy
Helaena had gripped your arm tightly as you helped bring her to the carriage looking with so much sadness at the sweet boy laid in the flowers
You helped her into the carriage with Queen Alicent taking the seat next to her, Helaena gripped you tight saying “stay” you smiled at her telling her “I will be right behind you if anything happens I will be there”
Throughout the ride she would look back at you to ensure you hadn’t left her alone during this
When the carriage got stuck and you could see Helaena begin to spiral, her wanting to run away and free herself you were quick to come beside the carriage and help free it from the pot hole it struck
She looked at you as you got back onto your horse, begging you silently with her eyes
You wanted to do anything to protect her but you knew you couldn’t in this moment, you would have to make it better after this and never leave her side never let this pain find her again
You never wanted to leave her again, barely eating or sleeping to ensure she was always guarded
Ser Otto had been the one to finally make you leave her side saying you needed to at least take care of yourself so you could protect the queen
Helaena had grown accustomed to you and relied on you, seeing you as a replacement for her husband
One night after a few cups of wine she had pulled you down to kiss her making you melt but look at her with wide eyes
She put her hands on your chest saying to you, “I want to understand what’s so enjoyable about…laying with someone.”
You loved her and wanted to protect her, a knights job was to give their body for who they protect, this is no different
You nodded letting her pull you to the bed, feeling like a virgin on your wedding night
When Aemond had demanded that Helaena join the war on Dreamfyre you had stepped between him and his sister stopping the prince from abusing the girl
The Prince was ready to take your head but his mother stepped in making the prince stalk way
You were twice as vigilant the next few days, always making sure the Prince couldn’t get near Helaena
The day that Alicent had set for her, Helaena and Jaehaera to flee she had grabbed you as well, intending to play you off as a caregiver or a lover if need be
You carried little Jaehaera while Alicent and Helaena made preparations, hearing the dragons roar over head
When Alicent and Helaena were dragged to the throne room you were there doing your best to ensure no one touched them while protecting the little princess
You ignored Rhaenyra on the throne, Ser Otto’s head on the floor, the cheers around you; only focusing on Helaena and how she was reacting
She gripped your arm hard the whole day, using you as an anchor so she wouldn’t fly too far away from herself
Your little group was put into a shared chamber where you fell back into your role of protector easily
You promised that you wouldn’t fail to protect her every again
That was until you overheard Queen Alicent speaking to her daughter discussing a baby, Helaena’s baby, one that was still in her stomach
