What is your favorite fanfic and why?

Oh man, this is going to sound so cliched and non-committal, but I honestly can’t pick. I’ve been reading fanfic since I was ten and there have been so many that have meant a lot to me.

I was entertained and there were some good moments for sure. i dont understand the hate that it got.

Like the dream/flashfoward sequences were kind of confusing ( but barry my sweet i can’t wait for your movie) but overall i thought it was an entertaining movie.

I aint gonna lie. I’m super tempted to just start churning out the most ridiculous paranormal romance novel I can come up with just to see if I can sell it. Basically the novel version of crackfic. Do you think the world is ready for abo?

Okay, here’s the thing, if you’re serious about this and want to write something that sells well in this particular market: It’s not about being ridiculous. It’s about doing the market research and learning what tropes are popular and then writing to those tropes. (Obviously, this only applies if your goal is “I want to write and make a lot of money.”) The top-selling segment right now is m/f shifter erotic romance, and the readers are voracious.

That does not mean, however, that they’re not particular. Romance readers can smell an author who doesn’t respect them from a mile away, so writing something you think is ridiculous is not going to fly with them. Everybody who’s not done it thinks writing romance is easy and anybody can do it well and that is definitely NOT the case. You can laugh with us--we know this shit’s ridiculous--but not at us.

Even if the tropes you’re writing are over-the-top, you have to take it seriously enough to establish the emotional connection with the reader, because the emotional connection is EVERYTHING. That’s what keeps a reader coming back. If you’re sniggering at them while you write it, that’s going to come through.

Also, re: market research: ABO is very much a thing in m/m erotic romance already, so yeah I think the world’s ready. ;)

tl;dr: it may be pretty cracky, but you can’t approach it like crack.
