Deeply fascinated by whoever had this book set in (amongst other places) 1830s rural India before me and made a note in it complaining that the gendered division of labour in the novel was "tiresome". There are times when you should expect a book to reflect more equitable gender roles but I don't think scenes describing Hindu peasants suffering under the brunt of the Raj is it.
#they seem to have stopped making notes after that point#sucks to be them it's a great book#great enough that I leant it to a friend who I have since lost touch with and had to buy it again at the op shop#hence the notes#it does delve into gender roles even!#have patience#the book is Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh btw
