Here Comes Hell is maybe my favorite intersection of a very low budget horror movie that manages to be a fantastic spook fest and completely bonkers splatterpunk movie which at the end of the day is both a heartfelt love letter to horror movies and it's own freaky unique monster.
Yes, it has jump scares and gore galore, and it's slow in places and the effects are on and off deliberately or accidentally laughable, but it takes itself exactly as seriously as it needs to without falling into the trap of self-loathing irony which ensnares so many parodies.
It is, I daresay, exactly the right type of movie to enjoy right now, when the weather is getting cooler and the nights are getting longer and all the Halloween decorations are going up in store shelves.
Killing Them Loudly: Horrorfest 2021
Public Library Horrorfest list so far. I’m amazed they have this many movies I haven’t seen yet. And yes I did plan this out months ago. 1.

Margaret Clunie just unveiled the poster for her upcoming film, Here Comes Hell. For some reason I can’t say that title without a smile on my face. Looking forward to seeing what the Duchess of Sutherland does with that sword!
Here Comes Hell
First of all, let me lead with: What the fuck did I just watch?
I’m pretty sure it’s good, I’ll add that much. Extremely low budget, but good, It’s the kind of low budget which has found a way to make the low budget work in service to the movie.
What we have here is a movie which uses as a frame device the style of a 1940′s style haunted house horror movie. It’s black and white, the aspect ratio is a square, and this allows both for less realistic effects in places, and also permits the actors to deliver stilted performances without necessarily taking you out of the movie. Alright, so that’s clever and the actual cinematography is quite skillful when you pay attention.
It is quite devoted to this device, the the credits, the pacing, the plot. It is also mashed up with with The Evil Dead. Which means that it shifts gears between “spooky 1940s movie” and “splatterpunk gorefest.” And it works? I’m not sure what the fuck has happened but it works?
So the pacing is rather slow, keeping with the framing device, but the camera work and commitment of the actors kept me invested. Then it slips into heads exploding, then the reactions are pure 1940s spook show, and that’s about what you’re in for if you decide to check it out.
Which, I think you should? It’s got this brilliant aesthetic as the characters dressed for a 1920s party increasingly add demon-fighting elements to their overall look. And of course it’s hard not to love a movie that ends with our blood covered heroine staring at the wreckage of the past evening in numb shock.
Finally, I must repeat what, once again, the fuck?

I absolutely hate parties as they give me anxiety. I have a lot of bad memories of being at a party and just trying to make it through. If I know people there, I have the bad habit of hanging near the only people I know. I just get anxious around groups of people in a less-than-casual setting. I much prefer a barbecue or a hangout session where there is no pressure and nobody feels they have to…
