Mirka
The wooden synagogue is the spiritual heart of the shtetl. Or, one of them, anyway. There are a lot of shuls. Can a shtetl multiple hearts? The noble earthworm has five, so probably.
Mirka is a plucky 11-year-old who would rather fight dragons than learn how to knit. There aren’t any dragons in her town, but there is a pig. And, as it turns out, a knitting contest. As well as a watery tart distributing swords.
If any Jewish Ms Marvel fans want a similar story with a Jewish protagonist-
Well that exists! It’s a comic called Hereville about a girl named Mirka who wants to fight dragons!
It has a very unique art style
Mirka’s religion has nothing to do with her dreams, she wants to fight dragons and happens to be Jewish
All of the magical beings that appear, even the antagonistic ones, respect Mirka’s religion and speak Yiddish with her since it’s her native language despite it not being theirs
It frequently shows her practicing her religion
The comic is partially written in Yiddish but has translations at the bottom of every page
This comic was the first time I saw myself in a work of fiction, and is the reason I am a writer. It’s also the reason I started reading Ms Marvel when it first came out because I was so happy that the Muslim community would experience the joy I felt reading Hereville.
Have you ever heard of the graphic novel series Hereville by Barry Deutsch? It’s about an orthodox jewish girl who wants to fight dragons. It’s really good!
I haven’t, but that sounds BRILLIANT and I’m definitely going to check it out the first chance I get!
(Also I high-key want to BE an orthodox jewish girl who fights dragons so like YES let me live my dream through comics please)
Book Reviews : Hereville by Barry Deutsch
Finally, a graphic novel that shows girls can want to be warriors but also love their family and their beliefs. The main character was definitely written like her age and I truly enjoyed that. Hope I find the rest of this series.
