Monica Bellucci in Maria Callas: Lettres Et Mémoires, Herodium
The past three days Bellucci appeared in the ancient theater of Herodium playing the internationally famous Greek soprano Maria Callas. Tom Volf's play is based on letters of Callas that give insight to her life from her youth to her last days.
I had the pleasure to witness this incredible performance. Belluci was stunning, reciting with clarity and emotion, which made the whole performance very engaging. What also moved me were the recorded Callas' arias played in the speakers between each letter, because it's just magical to listen to Callas' voice in a theater with an atmosphere like the one of Herodium.
That's Vissi D' Arte which is considered Callas' top aria. Only when in the theater did I realize how similar its lyrics are to Callas' life! Tosca, the opera heroine, says that she only lived for art and love, but now in the difficult situation she's in God has abandoned her. In a similar way, Callas was a genuinely good person who loved her art, but she ended up dying with a broken heart because of Onassis.
One of the last words of the play in Herodium were that Maria Callas' legacy is revealed in her recordings.
