Okay. I noticed something about Kai from TalesRunner last night at about 5 in the morning that really hurt my heart so here’s a post about it

So first here’s the GPotato English Translation of Kai’s Comic (x)

I personally consider the Korean version of the comic to be more “official” and reliable when it comes to canon since TalesRunner itself is a Korean game that has been translated to other languages, plus GPotato shut down their English TalesRunner server anyway and OGPlanet didn’t even bother to keep the stories updated. For me, it just seems like the Korean producers care about the game more, so I trust their version of Kai’s story a more.

Reading over the stories, they’re both, of course, very similar on the surface. They both follow the idea of “born from darkness, sick when the world is peaceful, Dr.Hell did some shady stuff and now there’s a whole lot of darkness, he got kidnapped, I need to fix this” kind of path.

One of the differences I noticed while reading through them was the tone they were written in. The GPotato version has Kai focus a bit more on his own situation, while the Korean version has Kai mention other things that have been affected. I’d also noticed, in the panel where Jin/Haru/Vega/Redhead is kidnapping Dr.Hell, Kai gets angry in the GPotato version (rightly so, don’t get me wrong), while in the Korean version he seems more saddened by the events. Considering that Kai himself is supposed to be the one drawing and writing everything in this comic, I took it as the GPotato one was written quickly and Kai ended up getting out all of his emotions on paper in a shorter time frame, condensing most of the story, and in the Korean one he took a bit more time to document his situation, which allowed him to calm down a bit and keep his composure in the comic while also mentioning the domino effect it had on the rest of Tales Land. This was actually just a really cool little thing that I noticed, but the endings were what really struck me.

In the GPotato version, Kai says that he wants to become a Tales Runner so he can get the wish stone and go back to living a normal, happy life with his dad, Dr.Hell. This is the story I’m used to reading, seems pretty normal. But, in the Korean version, Kai seems to express some regret for the chaos Dr.Hell caused in little ways leading up to the end of the comic. This can be shown when comparing two panels from each comic; in the GPotato version, when Dr.Hell steals the devil alchemy, Kai writes “So he stole the Devil Alchemy to gather enough darkness to cure me... / He did all of that just for me! You see?” and in the Korean version, in the same panels, he writes “So, just to cure me, my dad stole dark magic from the devil himself, / Only for me.....” It seems as though Kai’s happier in the GPotato comic, while Kai in the Korean comic is kinda like “wow, all this for me?” 

Not only that, but in the Korean comic, Kai says that he wants to become a Tales Runner so he can get the wish stone and, exactly as he put it, “restore peace to the world”. It has already been established that Kai becomes sick when the world is peaceful, and, without a significant amount of darkness, he might even die. He says that he wanted to live a peaceful life with Dr.Hell, but he also realizes how much the rest of Tales Land is being affected by the darkness.

Now, I want you to keep in mind how much darkness really affects Kai in Tales Runner. If you read the comics Part 4: Child of Darkness (x) and Part 5: The Other One (x) from the CHAOS series (I know these are GPotato translated as well, but they do a good job at explaining how much darkness affects Kai through both text and image so they’re pretty reliable), they hold some pretty vital moments with examples of what can happen to Kai without darkness. 

Child of Darkness takes place when Kai was a baby, and Dr.Hell ends up taking him to various doctors who don’t have a clue as to what’s wrong. It’s safe to assume that the sickness was getting pretty bad, as Dr.Hell is quoted as saying “No! No! I can’t let him go like this,” immediately before Jin is introduced. Sounds pretty dire, but he’s also a baby at the time, so we don’t really know what would happen if Kai was older.

Well, in The Other One, Kai is significantly older, perhaps somewhere in his mid teens. About midway through the comic, Kai is shown to once again be in bad health. Since he’s gotten older, it’s safe to assume that he needs more darkness (As Jin later confirms), and Dr.Hell’s previous solution is no longer as effective. Looking at what’s going on, it's pretty bad. First, Dr.Hell heard Kai screaming, then once he was in his room Kai was saying things like “Can’t... breathe...”, “It hurts... so much!”, “Help me!”, and “Make it stop!” Keep in mind this happened with darkness present in the world.

So, long story short, Kai is willing to suffer immense, horrible pain and die so that Dr.Hell, the runners, and every else in Tales Land can go back to being happy and peaceful without him.

Kai honestly gets such a bad rap in English TalesRunner.
