Yellow Palm Dart (Cephrenes trichopepla)
Lepidoptera study - 06/01/21 - Notocrypta waigensis, “Banded Demon”
This butterfly is quite a common sight for me, though I have little to say about it. It’s pretty ♥ Probably one of my favourite skippers.
Taxonomy: Superfamily Hesperioidea; Family Hesperiidae; Subfamily Hesperiinae
Food plant/s: Alpinia caerulea “Australian Native Ginger”, Hornstedtia scottiana, “Australian Native Cardamon”
Occupation/Territory: Australia (QLD), New Guinea and the Islands of Indonesia
Caterpillar has yet to be photographed, but is described as “Long, thin, and pale green, with a brown head.”

I found this little caterpillar in cocoon of a rolled up sugar cane leaf. I believe it might be Notocrypta waigensis, “Banded Demon”, because the description of the caterpillar on Australian Lepidoptera sounded very similar to the specimen I found.
I cannot find any other images online for confirmation though... And the Banded Demon is said to feed on Zingiberaceae “ginger” plants.
Any suggestions and info are welcome ♥

I enjoy going to nurseries, with so many plants for sale, there’s always a wide variety of insects.
These are the rolled-leaf cocoons of a Cephrenes caterpillar. Similar to leaf roller moths, these small butterflies (Family Hesperidae) create shelters by stitching together leaves with silk. The Cephrenes genus of Hesperid caterpillar feeds excusively on palms, and is found in Southeast Asia, and Australia.
