She and her team gained the confidence of local leaders who were fearful of outsiders that had a reputation for raiding the region’s treasures. Lady Stanhope and her team prepped carefully for the dig, unearthing part of a building that was perhaps a basilica. While falling short of her expectations, her efforts generated a wave of interest by others to become interested in the rumored treasures of ancient Ashkelon. Dubbed the “Queen of the Desert,” Lady Stanhope continued her escapades.
