as someone who went from genshin impact to hsr and has NEVER really played hi3 (and honestly never particularly wanted to) the way some hi3 veterans act has single-handedly kept me from ever touching that game out of pure spite.
because why is it that every single hsr discussion has to turn into:
“well in hi3—” “this is actually a reference to hi3—” “if you played hi3 you’d understand—” “hsr could never be as deep as hi3—”
my GOD. can we BREATHE?
i have loved luocha since the coffin reveal, but apparently if you don’t have a dissertation ready on otto apocalypse or void archives you’re “not a real fan” ??? i’m sorry??? i need to pass a prerequisite course to enjoy a blond man with a coffin???
the amount of “um actually he’s just otto expy number 472” or “if you don’t understand void archives you don’t understand him” was INSANE. it sucked the fun out of the character so fast. like damn i was just enjoying my morally questionable merchant.
and the irony is before hsr i was neutral about hi3. mildly curious, even. after hsr? the constant comparisons, the superiority complex, the refusal to let hsr stand alone??? it made me actively NOT want to play it. congratulations.
and here’s the worst part. i’ve seen su.
and oh my god. why does he look like THAT. why does he have the ethereal sage aesthetic. why is he green. why is he gorgeous. i’ve also seen a few other hi3 characters that genuinely look interesting. the designs are good. i’m not blind.
but now every time i consider trying hi3 my brain goes:
“remember the luocha discourse.” “remember being told you’re not a real fan.” “remember the ‘you just don’t get it’ essays.”
and suddenly i’m fueled entirely by petty resistance.
do i want to experience the lore for myself? maybe. do i want to enjoy the characters without someone breathing down my neck about how it’s all derivative? yes. am i stubborn enough to avoid it out of principle? unfortunately. also yes.
it’s hard out here being a petty person.
anyway. if you’re a hi3 fan who can talk about your game without turning every hsr post into comparative literature class, you’re fine. you’re lovely. you’re not the problem.
but the “won’t let the game die, won’t let other people enjoy things, won’t shut up about otto” crowd, you have successfully delayed my hi3 arc by at least six months.
and that’s on me being stubborn.
