the way you color and shade your art is stellar!! got any tips for someone who struggles with that kind of thing??

thank you so much!!  For shading the way I approach it is to block out the rough shadows on a multiply layer clipped on top of my base flats; map out the overall shadows and how the lighting will affect the subject with one shade then slowly blend more shades for variety. After I’m satisfied with the rough shadows I paint over the two layers and add highlights on a normal layer clipped above both of them.

I generally try to avoid picking a grey tone for shading as it’ll make the shadows appear dull; for skin shading I pick a warm light red and slowly make my way down, getting more saturated and if needed I blend some cool tones as well, I use cool toned shadows for everything else that isn’t skin. I only do this for neutral lighting though, it depends on the kind of lighting I place my subjects in.

I also pick some shades of blue and green and very lightly blend them in on some places for undertones. When in doubt, use references to help you with placing shadows in certain lightings.  TL;DR -  1. Start Big, block out overall shadows of whole picture and slowly make your way to details 2. don’t be afraid to use more saturated colors for shadows 3. use references when in doubt I’m not sure how to properly explain stuff and also it’s just my personal way of shading; Ultimately it’s up to you to find out what method suits you the best but I hope this helps! ^ ^;;
