William H. Seward's "higher law" speech, delivered in 1850 when Seward was a U.S. senator from New York, argued that the Constitution was not the ultimate law, and that a higher moral law, rooted in natural rights, should guide decisions, especially regarding slavery in new territories. Specifically, he argued that slavery was incompatible with this higher law and should not be allowed in new territories.
Seward delivered his "Higher Law" speech during the Compromise of 1850 debates, arguing against the Fugitive Slave Act and in favor of California's admission as a free state.
Seward's core argument was that a higher law, derived from natural rights and moral principles, existed above the Constitution.
A moral dilemma
My neighbor called me Wednesday to say that a deer had been hit by a car on our road; the driver had departed the scene and the deer was alive, thrashing around between my neighbor's mailbox and mine.
Knowing I'm a gun-owning hunter, he wondered if I would be willing to come over and put the deer out out of its misery.
I weighed my options:
I could suggest to the neighbor that he call the sheriff’s office and report the incident. Maybe a deputy would come by to put the deer down. In an hour ...? Three ... ? The next day ...?
I could load my 12-gauge shotgun, walk down my driveway and end the deer’s suffering in five minutes. No doubt the deer would be too mangled for human consmpton. But after shooting it, I could drag the carcass into the tall bushes and let nature take its course.
No doubt the second option would be illegal in several ways, but did my allegiance rightfully belong to a higher law ...?

I read this book Tuesday. Like most David Levithan books, it wasn’t too big, but it was still powerful. I related to the character Jasper the most, and this is a quote from him in the book, and I related. I have no personal experience with 09/11 since I was only 2, but I can still feel as if I experienced it from this book.
