For as much as she loved Cassian, his territorial fae bullshit went from endearing to amusing to slightly irritating within their last week together before he went out to fight. She could only thank the Gods that she was training women instead of men at the Illyrian camp.

Rhys had decided that they couldn’t spare the resources for one of his Commanders to simply sit doing nothing, but Cassian was adamant that Nesta would not fight. So Nesta had been delegated to diplomacy, along with Elain, who couldn’t stand the thought of going into battle, and Lucien, who wasn’t dealing well with the PTSD from his time living with Tamlin.

On their last morning together, after slow sex in bed, Nesta and Cassian lounged in the bathtub. She wasn’t showing and wouldn’t be for several months, but they’d had to tell the Inner Circle early to make plans.

“I know it’s a difficult morning,” he was saying as he rubbed her stomach, “but I’m getting some very intense feelings down the bond.”

Since he pressed — since he’d know if she lied — she told the truth. “This isn’t the right time to bring a child into the world.”

“We’re going to finish it,” Cassian said. “A few months from now, between Amren’s secret weapon and the Illyrians, we’ll have defeated most of their forces. And I have a feeling Rhys and Feyre are going to take down the king.”

“You really think it will be so short?”

“Have faith, Nes. We’ve planned this. We’re all strong.”

“He’s planned longer. I’m afraid.”

He turned her around in his lap so that they were face to face, her breasts resting against his chest. “I am, too.”

She could feel it down the bond. More than their desire to stay together was their desire for everyone to stay alive.

“Cas,” she whispered, “what if you die?”

She’d never allowed herself to be attached to anyone, and for good reason. There was no doubt her life was infinitely better with Cassian in it, but would their few weeks together be worth it if he died?

He rubbed her back as she rested her head on his shoulder.

“It’s going to be okay, Nesta. I’m not going to die, and neither are you.”

“You don’t know,” she said weakly. There was nowhere productive this conversation could go, no promise he could make that he could guarantee he wouldn’t break.

“I know,” he said anyway. “I know that I will live a very long immortality with you here. I can feel it.”

She could feel it too. The bond. If only she could trust it.

“We’ll win this in time for you to have our baby in a peaceful Prythian,” he said, turning his face to kiss her cheek. “I promise.”

Rhys sent Nesta, Elain, and Lucien to the Winter Court in hopes of rousing Kallias to their side. Though the Dawn and Spring Courts were lost, and the rest of the Inner Circle was on their way back Under the Mountain, there was still a chance Winter might join them.

So Nesta winnowed them to a beautiful and bitterly cold arctic tundra where Kallias’s men were to meet them. She was grateful for her own fire magic, and could tell from Elain’s flushed skin that Lucien was using his as well.

Rhys had told her they’d be coming on polar bears, but Nesta couldn’t even imagine what that meant until three fur-covered winter soldiers came riding up to them on the backs of massive white bears.

The soldiers didn’t even ask for their names as they lifted Elain, Lucien, and Nesta up behind them.

On the ride to the palace, all Nesta could think was that she would have to make this diplomatic mission count. Anything she could do to help Cassian — to see him again.

!! someone has written something along these lines. It's from like...the dawn ages of this fandom (ie old) but it's definitely been done (I don't think they actually wrote the sex itself but....it was a thing that very blatantly happened)

It's also a repeated phrase, so it references ACOTAR as well, he uses that in their first meeting when he comes to the manor at the Spring Court. I feel like there's some History there between Rhys and Lucien they've got a fairly fascinating dynamic. At the very least they know each other reasonably well pre-acotar I think.

(*side eyes* @valamerys and her casual mentions of Rhys x Lucien hate sex... *cough*)

Great point! I totally forgot about him saying it in ACOTAR too. (As usually, the depth of how much I need to reread is infinite.) Sarah’s writing really is incredible. I’m curious to see how Rhys and Lucien interact in the final book given the situation and their history.

okay, salty as I was, I have decided I should probably intro myself properly with some Knowledge. 

-My name is Taryn, I’m 26, I use they/them pronouns, and I’m from Scotland. 

-I have an AO3 account with multiple ACOTAR fics here: highfaelucien I intend to add more to it soon. 

-I welcome asks regarding fic prompts/meta requests. I’m a nerdy English lit grad and I enjoy analysis.

-I was in the fandom a few years ago but tapped out after some......intense disagreements with the way shit was going after ACOWAR. 

-my brain decided to have an intense Elucien renaissance a little while back so I made a new blog with my old OG name highfaelucien. 

-I ship Feysand, Nessian, and Elucien. But I’m also partial to a great n umber of rarepairs including: Rhys/Lucien, Az/Lucien, Mor/Nesta, Mor/Elain, Feyre/Lucien, Lucien/Andras, Cass/Azriel, Tarquin/Lucien and....probably many others I’ve forgotten at this point. 

-I stan Lucien, Mor, and Nesta above all else. 

-I’m anti Tamlin and Eris, which I will tag. 

-I WILL be critical of some aspects of the series, this again I will tag, but be aware that I do have some concerns about it, specifically Lucien, Mor, and Nesta’s treatment.

-I might repost some of my old meta/posts from ye olden times. we’ll see.

As soon as she’d thought about escaping, she could feel his frustrated reaction. Gods, this was awful. She’d never be able to hide her emotions behind sarcasm again. They’d have to actually communicate.

Worse, he might find out she loved him.

She slammed a wall over the thought as fast as she could. From the look on his face, he didn’t feel it. Hear it. Whatever.

“Nesta,” he said again, inching toward her as if she wouldn’t notice. “Why did you say I wouldn’t want you?”

There were about a thousand reasons, obviously, so she just went with the first. “Look at me.”

She felt a brief wave of bafflement down the bond for a second before it cut off sharply, like he’d tried to block it. “I mean, you were attractive as a human. But now…”

Nesta’s hands reached up to her ears unconsciously.

“Now,” he continued firmly, “you’re strong from training. You’re capable of flying and winnowing. And you’re immortal, which is a plus. Why is this a negative?”

She barreled on. “You don’t like that Rhys is making you train me. You act like I’m dumb every time you talk about Feyre and Rhys’s bond. You—”

“Nes, come on. I don’t think you’re dumb.”

“You always say I won’t understand!”

“Well I didn’t know you had a mate,” he said, clearly exasperated even without the bond sending her his every emotion. He was only a few feet from her now — why wasn’t he getting tired?

“And,” she said, scrambling for more negatives. She didn’t have any. She loved him. What could she possibly say? If only she could convince him to give her some time. If only he had liked he just a little more when she’d spilled the truth. Then she wouldn’t have to talk him out of it at all.

“And?” He asked impatiently. “Does Rhys know? He must. He can’t not know.”

“You don’t like me,” she said, going with the truth out of desperation. If he felt forced to love her, especially after what happened with Mor, he’d never want her. Never. At least if he refused her now he’d save her future pain. “You couldn’t love me.”

He didn’t bother blocking the despair on the bond; he rather flung it at her, forcing her to feel how totally unwanted her words made him feel. Her body actually hurt with the force of his pain. She never wanted him to feel like this again, ever, she —

That’s when his wings gave out.

She rocketed after his falling form, the idiot, who had stayed with her rather than landing like he was supposed to. As she flew, she grew her wings out to their original size. She remembered Mor mocking her wingspan that first day, and stretched them even wider than that.

Any emotion she felt was blocked by utter panic.

When she caught him around the waist, latching on with every muscle, all she could do was press her face into his neck and let her wings act as a parachute.

They slowed.

She exhaled shakily against his shoulder, not looking up until she felt him bump gently against the ground. He was on his back. She was on his chest. She vanished her wings to remove their weight.

“I’m sorry,” she said, her eyes searching his. “I’m so sorry, Cas, I didn’t mean to push you, I —”

He interrupted her with his lips.
