PSA: About Hilda

( ooc. I don’t normally make these kinds of posts, and this is probably going to be kind of long-winded, so please bear with me. Also, I won’t tag spoilers for this, as I feel this needs to be seen, and there aren’t that many spoilers in the post to begin with, IMO, and that FE4, a 23-year-old game for the Super Famicom, is spoiled more than Three Houses here.

It’s okay to not like characters. It’s going to happen eventually, and I’d say it’s healthy to have characters you don’t like. Some characters are designed/written to be unlikeable and even hated, and these characters typically serve as villains.

It’s probably safe to say that Three Houses has had one of the best launches in Fire Emblem history, and that the overall fanbase is going to see a new player boom that likely hasn’t been seen since the likes of Awakening (unless Fates brought in more new players than I thought, but that’s beside the point). That goes for the rpc as well. And I know for some people, seeing character hate can be distressing or unpleasant, for lack of better phrasing.

Hilda Valentine Goneril from Three Houses is kind of an unfortunate case, as she’s one of a few characters in the franchise to share her name with a character from one of the older games: Hilda, Queen of Miletos from Genealogy of the Holy War, aka FE4. FE4′s Hilda is one of the most objectively evil characters in the franchise, and a massive bitch; FE4′s Hilda is, as I mentioned above, a villain, and a character that is intentionally written to be hateable.

Blogs that feature characters from the Jugdral games (FE4 and FE5) may make mention to FE4′s Hilda, especially characters such as Tailtiu, Tine, Linda, Ishtar etc., and chances are they’re going to talk about how evil Hilda is. To any 3H Hilda players that may be distressed by character hate, please don’t assume that any hate you might see towards a character named Hilda is immediately talking about 3H Hilda unless specified otherwise, especially if the details don’t fit Three Houses at all; if a post is old (i.e. a post from pre-2018, before 3H had been officially revealed); or if the poster is somebody who doesn’t play Heroes and/or has skipped 3H entirely, as they may not know Hilda from 3H even exists.

Unless character hate is specified to be about Hilda from Three Houses, be careful and please don’t let it get to you.
