A piece i started in January but i finally got around to finishing it! It's based in this one line "Father laid his hand upon my chest. He named me his true heir!" and it's also meant to match this one i made for his bday, this new one being focused on the destruction he caused in comparison to the other one being focused on the people who love him.
In spite of her early death, Queen Lumera is one of my favorite Fire Emblem parents in the franchise. So for Day 26 of EngageMonth2026, I want to take time to honor her role in the story. And why I don’t necessarily mind her death and long conversations. By the way, major spoilers for the entire game.
I feel Lumera’s character works better when you finally know who she actually was through her backstory with Alear. Then, once you and Alear know the impact of Lumera’s sacrifice, it also explains why Alear would become more forgiving of Veyle after her she (inadvertently) killed their mother.
Having all that being said, if we look at Lumera’s first death in a vacuum, it definitely felt poorly executed on the surface. So looking at the Manga, Lumera does survive the initial battle at Lythos, but she returns to save Alear and Co. from Destina Cathedral after Sombron and Veyle took the Emblem Rings. And Lumera is then directly killed by EVeyle.
I actually prefer this more to make Lumera’s death not feel so abrupt. As well as to explain how Alear and Co. were able to escape from Sombron’s forces. And finally, it adds just a little more tragedy to the already unfortunate events that were chapter 10 through 11.
Now back to the game, I feel that each and every shared with Alear and Lumera is meant to hit harder after Alear learns that they are Sombron’s child. The line “becoming your mother” hits harder with this truth in mind. Even if Alear doesn’t themselves didn’t know or realize it, they still believed that they must have shared that connection because she was kind to them.
Lumera’s death would shape Alear’s resolve for the rest of the game. Alear’s behavior towards each of the other rulers in the kingdom focuses on not letting other Royals feel the pain they suffered. This is one of the big reasons why King Morion’s death is meant to serve as one of failings in their duty as Divine Dragon.
And as for the Emblems, each of them are meant full the void Lumera left behind. Emblem Marth was the first and only “companion” Alear had for a thousand years, so having Marth stolen from them was a huge blow to Alear’s heart on top of learning of Veyle’s “true alinement” and Morion’s death. And Sigurd was Lumera’s closest confidant before her death.
So when Emblem Lyn and Lucina arrive to fill the void the other Emblems leave behind, they teach Alear a lesson that Lumera could have taught them if she was still alive. This, on top of the Emblem Paralogues, serve as Alear’s character development after the events of chapter 11.
Speaking of which, going back to Sigurd; Sigurd plays an important role in Alear’s relationship with Veyle. As Veyle turns out had an evil personality doing all of the horrible things she was accused of. But Alear and Co. are unaware of this until chapter 17.
After learning the truth, we get the important scene of the entire game. Veyle tricks Zephia into thinking she was still under her control in order return Sigurd’s ring to Alear. Veyle’s act of kindness is what would make Alear question if Veyle deserves to be condemned or not.
How fitting that Sigurd’s Paralogue is unlocked not long after the truth about Veyle is revealed. Both here and later in chapter 20, Sigurd gives Alear a valuable lesson that will change their perspective on Veyle. “There is no single truth” is the lesson that Sigurd passed on to his son even after his death,
So it’s natrual that Sigurd would be the one to help Sigurd learn of the importance of Lumera’s sacrifice. That her Divine Dragon power allows the Emblems to use their true power and are allowed to be as themselves. So even if Alear was Sombron’s child, they can still save the world.
Thanks to this moment, Alear is fully convinced that they should help Veyle just as everyone else helped them. And after Alear ends up dying protecting Veyle, they learned of their original self’s wish to be a dragon who saves the world.
And in owed to that wish, Alear has no intention of giving up. Alear’s resolve and kindness gives Veyle the courage to step out of Sombron’s shadow and become her own person. And this act would allow Alear to fulfill his promise to the Emblems and her mother becoming the Fire Emblem.
In chapter 2, Lumera had intended on giving Alear the Emblem Ring right away. But Alear chose not to accept it because they didn’t have proof that they were Lumera’s child. So Alear wanted to accept the ring when they learned the truth; here, Alear truly accepted Lumera as their mother (even if not biological).
By becoming an not giving up on Veyle and becoming an Emblem, Alear truly did ensure that Lumera’s sacrifice wouldn’t be for naught. And I feel this becomes more apparent in chapter 25 when Alear has to fight Corrupted Lumera. Alear has already fought the corrupted versions of Morion and Hyacinth, and even became one themselves, Corrupted Lumera serves as Alear’s final test before they are truly ready to face Sombron.
People have compared this to when Mikoto was revived by Anankos in revelations, but for me, this is the improvement of that plot point. Mikoto’s “revival” and usage only happens on a DLC route that’s no longer available. That and I felt Lumera has played enough of a role in the story that Lumera serving as pre final battle of the game is one of best ways to cap off Alear’s character.
And finally, the role of the Pact Ring in Alear’s paralogue. The Pact Ring was never used by Lumera, and she likely left it for Alear’s usage. To spread to love in their own way just as she did for them, and vice versa.
So I feel giving the Pact Ring to Veyle is the perfect conclusion to Lumera’s role in the story. Lumera became Alear’s light in the darkness. And now Alear becomes this to Veyle, in spite of her unwitting role in Lumera’s death.
One of the final things I want to note is when it comes to the symbolism of the Emblems, Lumera was the Marth to Alear’s Tiki. And now the logic applies to Alear in the present because Marth is Alear’s first associated Emblem. So Alear’s character development was to do the same for Veyle, who also represents the Tiki archetype, despite the subversions Veyle has in that role.
For all that Lumera didn’t do in the story, her very existence is what shapes Alear and the story of Engage even after her death. And the Emblems’ role and symbolism in this story is crucial to understanding Lumera’s role in the game. That’s why she is my favorite Fire Emblem parent. R.I.P. to her.
My other favorite video game is fire emblem. The dragons designs are so cool! My favorite is grima I've plan on doing a painting some day. Another one of my favorites is nifl, the ice dragon from heros.
