I know you’ve got a sort of enigmatic vibe going on, but where do you get all these ideas from? I don’t think I could come up with half the things you draw about on my own.
They usually just appear in my head when I’m doing something boring or without much sensory stimuli, like driving, walking, or showering. It also happens when I’m drawing directly- Drawing itself is a kind of a sensorial detached space to exist in, plus, a slip of the hand might result in a thicker snout, a more devious expression, etc, which directly feeds back into creative thought. It’s a feeling I really treasure.
I used to get great ideas when I flew cross country more frequently, and I first imagined some connection between this liminal space and the creative process. That is partly true, but I soon realized it was one of the few remaining places I couldn’t obsessively check the internet for several waking hours, so my mind had to fill in the gaps.
As for the content, it is a result of an upbringing during deep changes in media, a critical view of consumer culture, and reflections on my liberal arts education.
In any case, if you’re interested in this process, I recommend consuming novel media, picking up random books, listening to random radio stations for a spell, etc., and then letting ideas form during quiet moments if you can. It’s especially important to doodle without an end goal in mind. Thank you for the kind words.
