hinata x reader
1.4k words, fluff, 'badgirl'/'delinquent' reader, timeskip (third-year!hinata)
this is based on saeko's encounter with udai tenma (the little giant) when she attended school, just that it's now you and hinata.
you were strolling through the corridors of your school - karasuno highschool. the halls were empty, which would usually be weird, but not in this case.
behind the closed classroom doors, lessons were continueing like usual, you would have had to attend english class right now. but of course, there was something more entertaining than listening to your teacher talk about tenses and whatnot - which was skipping school.
you don't even know how you've managed to get to this point. in middle school you were known as the tame kid, the one that didn't say much, the shy goody-two-shoes. somewhere along the line that timid little girl got lost though, turning into a direct, mature woman. you were still a rather quiet person, but now you were seen as more of an intimidating or even 'dangerous' presence.
with your frends however, you were loud, rebellious, and admittedly kind of a trouble maker. you liked your friends - a lot. they were like a second family to you. All of you having similar styles, personalities, and hobbies.
you usually stayed in your circle or wandered around alone. the only exception for this was your best friend hitoka. she was a sweet girl, all smiles and shy. neither of you two remembered how you ended up being friends, but both of you knew that this friendship was one of the best things to ever happen.
yachi was manager of the volleyball club - you knew as much. but you had never really been interested in sports, leaning more towards the creative ways of life, like music, art or photography.
when thinking of hitoka, you got the idea to pay her and the volleyball team a visit. you knew two of the members in their third year, as you saw them wandering around with yachi a lot. their names were tsukishima and yamaguchi.
you also knew that there were two other thrid-years in the volleyball club, since yachi does talk a lot about the club activities, and in this case also about the two troublemakers you haven't met yet. at first you'd assumed that they were like you and your friends, but hitoka informed you that they were nothing like you, or at least nothing like you assumed they were. beyond that you didn't know much.
after a short walk to the gym, you could already hear the sound of the player's shoes squeaking on the wooden floor, and the sound the ball made on impact with the floor.
you turned towards the wending machine and took a look at all the drink options. after selecting a small juice box, paying for it, and removing it from the small collection bin at the bottom, you decided to lean against the wall outside to wait for the team to take a break so you could go talk to hitoka.
not even a few seconds later, while you were still sipping on the straw of your juice, you could hear commotion from inside the gym. there were different voices, all louder than normal. you assumed they got into a fight or something when you heard a deeper voice call out a name. must be the coach, you thought.
"hinata! calm down, go outside and take a breather. we can't have you play like this."
the silence following was loud, the only thing you heard was a loud huff, and then heavy, loud steps towards the gym's exit - towards you.
you couldn't even prepare for the boy that walked out angrily. he didn't look at all like what you'd imagined a volleyball player to look like - well, to some extent. what you had expected was the black and orange karasuno jersey. the number five was written on his back in white. what you didn't expect though was the bright orange mop of hair on his head, as well as his height.
as far as you knew, volleyball was a sport for tall people. and until now, your encounters with volleyball players of the school had proven that to be a fact, since tsukishima was well over 190cm and yamaguchi was not far behind either (based on your assumptions). the boy that stomped out of the gym right now though, was by far not as tall as the other two. you'd say he wasn't much taller than 170cm, maybe not even that.
'hinata' - as the man called him, walked straight over to the wending machine where you just bought your juice, and stood there for a second before banging his head against the big, metal box. a bucket that was placed on top of it fell down and onto his head with a painful thud. his hand moved up to roughly rub over the spot the bucket hit.
he paused for another few seconds before turning around, his eyes cathing yours. a shiver ran down your spine at the intensity of his gaze, it almost scared you. this felt nothing like yachi had described him. if you could remeber correctly he was supposed to be the goofball of the other two thrid-years you hadn't met, the cheerful and happy one that couldn't hurt a fly.
you were brought back to reality by a soft voice calling for the boy.
"hinata! have some water. you should sit out for a while, i think that would help you a- what are you doing here?"
yachi walked out of the gym, clearly concerned for hinata, but then she spotted you. her tone shifted from concern to shock and excitement at seeing her bestfriend waiting outside the gym.
"i was waiting for you to finish so we could walk home together. skipped class for you." you said, trying to seem chill in front of the boy that was now fully turned towards you and staring.
"what did i tell you about skipping school! i know your grades are still good but you shouldn't be here... whatever, you can come inside and wait there, maybe keep hinata some company until he finally calms down again." she said, half dissapointed, partially happy that you came to see her.
her gaze shifted over to hinata, looking at him and signaling to go back inside.
you greeted the people in the gym, and thanked the coach - turns out his name was ukai - for letting you be there to watch. as you took a seat on a bench set next to the court, hinata sat down on your right side, while yachi sat down on your left.
you were about to talk to her, but realised she was busy fairly quickly, as she pulled out her notebook to document practice and think of strategies. your gaze then wandered over towards hinata. he was sitting there silently, staring at his feet.
"oi, idiot! don't sulk around now. get your shit together and you can play again next set." said one of the players still standing on the field. his jersey number was the number two. the boy beside you only grumbled out a low "yeah" before turning to look at you.
"sorry for that... i'm usuall not like this." he said, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand. "i just get really passionate when i play volleyball."
"you know, usually i don't get scared so easily, but your stare out there really made me shiver for a second." you admitted lowly, chuckling at your own cowardness.
"oh my god, i'm so sorry..." he mumbled, cheeks turning a dusty pink.
you couldn't help but think he was cute at that moment. he was totally not your type, but if you were honest, he intrigued you. the way he could be so intense one second and then turn into a complete sweetheart the next. your thoughts wandered to not-so-appropriate places before you could stop them, and you could feel your face heating up a little.
"don't worry..." you whispered, breaking eyecontact, hoping he wouldn't notice you also turning red.
unbeknownst to you, hinata's thoughts were racing too. he couldn't believe he scared a cute girl like that. internally, he had already thought of three ways to properly appologise to you (and maybe ask you out on a date in the same go).
the blush on your cheeks also didn't go unnoticed, not by him, not by others in the room. yachi had to hold back from chuckling, tsukishima was staring you down with the most judgemental look ever - how could anyone ever start blushing because of that dwarf's actions... - and yamaguchi realised soon after catching tsukishimas judgemental gaze.
and maybe, just maybe, he'd skip class once, in hopes of meeting you in the corridors to get the chance to ask you out.
idk how i just shook this out of my sleeve (i really wanted to use this phrase but it doesn't exist in english... "aus dem ärmel schütteln" is such a genius thing to say omg).
well anyway i hope you like this! as always there could be a part two of this following but it will most likely take me some time to complete that. the first parts always are always written so quickly but the second parts are such a pain...
and here we have a little third-year hinata bonus:
