It's a matter of seeing the huge difference between the creation of the characters. The Ginyu special forces were emblematic and each one had its own role and looked different, I don't even remember the names of the others and they look the same.

BLAABR- Makina-Hiria

 Just a little doodle showing BLAABR’s setting of the fictional island city of Makina-Hiria.  The blue section is the Business Quarter, the light gray is the Commercial Quarter, the light green is the Residential Quarter, and lastly the olive drab is the Wharf Subquarter. Other than the city’s one national airport and one private airport, the city is connected to the rest of Espana via a long seaway that contains both a two way road and underneath this a railway that connects to a special metro hub in northeast Deba. The city, though maintaining special administration status, is technically part of Gipuzkoa. Makina-Hiria is of course much smaller and farther off the coast than depicted I simply made it bigger and closer for detail.

Hiria: Vulture, Travelers, Garum -  #02

A colorful city of private villas and grand amphitheaters, under a dome.

You meet a representative of the Traveling Society; a poster in the window of a shop.

I met a strange old bird at the baths, literally; a most elegant vulture. While I tried to wash the scent of smoke from my hair, and she preened ash from her feathers, we introduced ourselves. Her name is Madame Albans; like me, she is a traveler in the city (and the city behind the city), although a far more experienced one. She offered to present me to the rest of her Society, and I accepted – funds grow short (15 units for a bath, can you believe it!) and I will need friends in this crush of strangers.

In the streets, Madame Albans was carried by a servant with a wooden flag-staff, with her own self as the flag. At an unremarkable door, she knocked thrice with her beak, and then the servant opened it onto a garden; I do not know if it was the knocking or the opening that did it, but it was another version of the city.

It was not a garden. Or rather, it was a private one, a park for the Traveling Society inside the walls of their compound. Madame Albans made introductions, although none seemed so remarkable as her; I have the sense that she is something of the matriarch of this group. They asked how I had found my travels so far, and much good-natured amusement was had at my own naivete; none had heard of Gara before, and they seemed uninterested in my explanation – she is as unregarded here as she was at home. But they told me of some of the signs by which they traveled, and I slept on a bench of fine cloth and too-hard pillows, and I had a promise of a loan and a tour when I awoke.

It was a poster in one of the shop windows that made me pause, a jar and something like her name. Had she been drawn here by the scent that filled the street, a pungent ocean reek? The wood above the window had been raked as if by claws; I could barely touch the marks when I stretched to my full height, and as I came down, a splinter drove itself into my finger. The city changed around me.

Hiria: Purpose, Journey, Heritage - #01

A forgotten god, a vow, and spilled blood.

A colorful city of tall spires and thick buttresses, under a dome.

A fire is raging; an appearance in an advertisement.

Gara is a troublesome goddess. She guards purpose, journeys, and heritage. As the world has shrunk, she became less purposeful and more troublesome, and her worship faded, but I recognized her from my grandmother's stories; a giant spotted cat, walking away from me. She is terrifying; I knew I had to follow. I made the journey to Hiria.

Hiria is larger than I knew. I know Gara respects vows; I made one to find her here and learn what I could, to have something to tell my family when I returned. (Not that they'll listen anyway.) But I couldn't see her. No one had seen a large jaguar, and I don't think that's the sort of thing someone would forget to mention. People talk about other spirits here, but none I recognize.

I could have given up. Well, actually, I almost did. I was on my way out of the city when I saw her pawprint on the ground, larger than both my hands. Grandmother said Gara respects atonement. I cut my arm and scattered blood into the dirt; I will not turn away from my path again. When Iooked up, I was in the eternal city.

It was Hiria still, but different. The rain had stopped, although the ground still felt damp. The city still swirled with color, but the buildings seemed sturdier, taller, some stretching up even further to hold up a painted dome of stars. I would have stopped to wonder, but at the smell of smoke I turned around - this city was on fire! I ran, of course.

Later, as I stood in the crowd at the end of the street, watching as the city fought the blaze with ladder and hose, I saw Gara. Not the goddess, of course, but her image. Someone offered me a cigarette, and on the package was her wide golden head, laughing. (Roaring?) It didn't taste like Grandmother's, but it was a comfort anyway, as the smoke filled up under those painted stars.

Journal Game November - Hiria: The Eternal City

So I didn't want to commit myself to NaNoWriMo again this year, but I did have a thought while playing with some friends tonight that a journaling game might be a thing I could do just to write a bit more regularly. Anyway, having decided that, let's give it a start; I'll try to keep some consistent tags so you can filter if you want to.

You might barely notice the changes when traveling to another version of Hiria, while in other cases the city might have changed beyond recognition. The City Beyond the City, the Sideways City, the City Behind the Facade, Backstage, the Manifold, there are as many names for the hidden ways between the aspects of Hiria as there are aspects themselves. You tracked your quarry here, but they escaped to one of Hiria’s other manifestations. Will you follow them? Will you be able to find them? Or will they be lost to you forever?
