The first thing people like to point out about me is that while I’m ‘petite’, I’m also a ball of colors. I love bright colors and I like to think that it has to do with my heritage. In Mexico, it’s hard not to find a blast of colors in the streets, in my home. It’s beautiful, if you ask me, and since I can’t visit Mexico as often as I would like, I do my best to carry on these little customs to remind me of where I come from, even at work. I dance our traditional folklore dances, I try to speak Spanish whenever I can, eat our best dishes. Maybe it’s also why I collect fishes? To remind me that I, too, live in a melting pot and it’s beautiful to me how well we can get along most of the time.

My family’s not the most loved. Actually, it’s probably one of the most hated families in the wizarding communities. I, myself, find it hard sometimes to be proud of my name. The one thing I’m not afraid, the thing that I’m not reluctant about, is where I come from. Because, yes, my parents were terrible, but my family is not just them. It goes beyond them. My maternal grandmother’s French, my maternal grandfather’s English, and my paternal grandparents are from Columbia. I am a mixture of so many things and it’s amazing. Sure, I’m not very good at my Spanish but I try and I know that being Columbian is not rooted in whether or not I know the language. It’s knowing that I am and that I am proud to be. I typically remember that in the mornings when I drink my coffee imported from Columbia before playing my violin.

I lost my home a long time ago but I never lost my roots. I know who I was before I had to run away, and I'll know who I am the day I die. I was born in one of the last Aztec villages in Mexico. My name was chosen with great care as it means 'star' and 'warrior'. I tend to believe in the second choice. My name is a literal translation of: a warrior of the river. I take it to heart. I may not be home anymore by the rivers, but I do what I can when I'm in New York. The long walks, the hikes in the woods,, the retreats, is where I connect with home. I sing the songs of my village in Nahuatl, mediate in hopes of finding them and peace. But of course, working constantly in the CIA doesn't leave a lot of time for that kind of stuff. I travel a lot. I meet new people, learn different customs and adapt. I always adapt.

My family was one of the original founders of Horseshoe Bay after immigrating from Mexico. We’ve been here from the start and I’m lucky enough to be able to celebrate my differences. I am from Horseshoe Bay but I’m also from Mexico. It’s fun getting to put two different sides into one pot. I speak English and Spanish, as well as writing each fluently. I try my best to make sure everyone else in town feels like they can do the same. I’m a positive community icon going between college, my job at the library and my photography even if others — Ace, I’m looking at you — like to make fun of me for it.

I was born in America and I've lived here for my entire life. Most my family still resides in Mexico and I always set time to visit them each year. I may not see them a lot but I carry our traditions and customs in every wat that I can. I speak our language, I eat our dishes and I dance our dances. It may sometimes earn me some odd stares but that's alright. I am who I am and I come from a beautiful place.

"I don't know a lot of my mother's side of the family. I grew up in New York. I know that we're from Mexico and that I have family still living there. I speak a bit of Spanish but I also know that there is way more that I could learn and value. One day I might visit Mexico just to see where I come from. It is, after all, my right to know."

‘Sing, choirs of angels, All ye citizens of Bethlehem’
“That's what my name means,” Belén leaned on Barry while they listened to the carolers. “Bethlehem?” she chuckled at his confused face. “It’s ‘Belén’ in English. Bethlehem is supposed to be the place where Jesus was born. I grew up hearing that story all the time.”
