”I find it funny how I exist to you all only when you need something.” - Rhode Island, 1776
Rhode Island was the first British colony in America to formally declare its independence on May 4, 1776, a full two months before the national Declaration of Independence. That is because he never once saw England as a mentor or type of father figure. Instead, he had seen the Empire as a monster.
He had known England for years, but not on a personal level, and quite frankly didn’t want to know him at all. Mainly because he blamed England for the death of the Native American family that raised him and didn’t wish to be apart of any other family. He wished to be alone, not wanting to be hurt again and that is why he never saw England as a ‘father’ or ‘big brother’. He was merely nothing more than the man that destroyed his spirit and repulsed Rhode Island.
He wanted nothing more than to be away from the Empire.
For that very reason, declaring independence from the great nation had been an easy choice but also the best choice he would probably make in his entire life. It had simply been a relief because it meant no attachments with England whether it be emotional, political, or personal. It wasn’t like he had any of those with him in the first place anyway.
But then came the issue with the United States Constitution. He was the last colony to ratify it because he had to be forced to do so (the states had threatened to tax him as a foreign country). Rhode Island didn’t realize that declaring independence would mean he would have to submit to somebody else’s dominion.
Again.
So Rhode Island built up walls and refused to be close to the other colonies but of course, his wishes were drowned out and he later became the thirteenth state of the United States of America.
Something that Rhode Island, at the time, wasn’t happy about.

studyblr introduction
So I’ve had this blog for like two months now and still haven’t introduced myself...
- My name is Emily (she/her) and I’m 18 years old.
- I’m going to 2nd year of cegep in Honours Health Science. I live in Montreal, Canada and we have this thing called cegep (because we gotta be special) and it’s two years between high school and university. It’s a mix of general education (French, English, etc) and specialized courses depending on your program.
- Starting school in two days, yikes. This semester I have:
Organic Chemistry I
General Biology I
Linear Algebra
Medicine and Ethics (sooooo excited about this)
Sociology - Crime and Punishment
English - New Age Literature
- I want to become a doctor, specifically global/tropical medicine or pediatrics
- Addicted to coffee
- I’m bilingual in English and French, although my native language is Chinese (Mandarin), but I forgot a lot of it. I also speak Spanish and am learning German.
- Always binging on TV shows. I’m watching The Defenders rn and it’s grEAT. Also love Dr Who, all medical dramas and so many crime shows, such as, but not limited to, CSI, Law and Order SVU, Broadchurch, Sherlock, etc, etc
- Don’t read as much as I want to, but right now I’m reading Doing Right. It’s on medical ethics and it’s super interesting. Love Harry Potter (Ravenclaw for life), The Great Gatsby and Handmaid’s Tale.
- I love listening to podcasts because I can learn so much while on the bus or in the metro. My faves are Oh No! Ross and Carrie, Sawbones, The Daily, Pod Save America, Skeptics with a K and The Friendly Atheist.
- I want to post original pictures and possibly do the 100 days of productivity challenge. This is a sideblog, by the way.
