gu///ren doesn’t mind belittling himself in front of certain people --- specifically superiors in the hīragi house; & if the insult isn’t that big to he’ll just shrug it off or not care. he’d been called trash and scum and other things since he was a kid for belonging to a house of the lowest branch; to them, he really was trash. lot of this is because he attended a school filled with people from more important houses that were all loyal to the hīragi house: a school where everyone was superior in status than he was. a school where everyone was the enemy. it also stems from the fact that his family followed a different religion than everyone else -- the  hīragis and their subordinate houses followed the mikado no oni/emperor’s demon, while gu///ren’s family broke off from that and followed mikado no tsuki/emperor’s moon. he was the only kid in the school ( save for his retainers ) that followed mnt.

so, at this school, he’d have to dwindle himself down. he would purposefully take hits and whatever was thrown at him from other kids and deal with whatever they said about him. he would act like he was dumb and didn’t know anything. ofc that wasn’t true because he is extremely powerful and smart -- but he didn’t want to attract attention from the people running the school ( hīragi house ).

because of this gu///ren’s used to insults and all of that being thrown at him, casually or not. he doesn’t take any to heart or really bats an eye at them. he also doesn’t mind taking. ofc he doesnt like being humiliated, so it does matter who it comes from --- if it’s a complete stranger saying smth he finds insulting, he’ll say something back. he speaks in a way that tries to make sure the other person doesn’t gain the upper hand in a conversation ( example: if someone has info he wants but is making him lower himself in any way to get it, he’ll just brush it off and not do that. mostly, because he’ll find a way to get the information or he really will just leave it at that. tho it matters the situation.)
