SPN finale is all 3
Charles Laughton with Prunella Scales, one of his three daughters in Hobson’s Choice (1954). Prunella was born in Surrey, England, and has 122 acting credits, from a 1952 mini-series of Pride and Prejudice on the telly, her first feature in 1953, to four shorts 2012-2014. Almost all of her work has been on the telly, although she was also in Howard’s End, and Wolf with Jack Nicholson.
Hobson’s Choice was expertly photographed by Jack Hildyard, Jack was born in London and had 68 cinematography credits, from uncredited assistance on Laurence Olivier’s Henry V (1944), his first credit in 1945 to Florence Nightingale, a 1985 movie on the telly with one of Charlie’s Angels, Jaclyn Smith in the title role. His other entry among my best 1,001 movies is Anastasia (1949) with Ingrid Bergman. Jack’s other notable credits are Caesar and Cleopatra with Vivien Leigh and Claude Rains, Summertime with Katharine Hepburn and again with David Lean, The Bridge on the River Kwai (his third with David Lean), Suddenly Last Summer (again with Katharine Hepburn), The Sundowners, Casino Royale, and Topaz.
David Lean behind the scenes of Hobson’s Choice (1954) with Charles Laughton and John Mills. This is David’s fifth entry among my best 1,001 movies, after Blithe Spirit, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, and Lawrence of Arabia.
Brenda de Banzie and John Mills in Hobson’s Choice (1954). Brenda was born in Manchester, England and had 41 acting credits from 1951 to a 1971 movie on the telly of The Ten Commandments. Her other entry among my best 1,001 movies is The Man Who Knew Too Much, as Lucy Drayton, who had custody of kidnapped Hank. Her other notable credits are The Entertainer (with Charles Chaplin), Come September (with Rock Hudson) and The Pink Panther.
Hobson’s Choice (1954) was adapted by David Lean and two others from a 1915 stage play by Harold Brighouse.
Charles Laughton as Henry Hobson in Hobson’s Choice (1954). Chuck was born in Yorkshire, England, and had 65 acting credits, from three 1928 shorts, his first feature in 1930, to Advise and Consent in 1962. His other entries among my best 1,001 movies are The Old Dark House, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), Witness for the Prosecution and Spartacus. His only credit as a director, Night of the Hunter, is among my top 133. His other notable credits are The Private Life of Henry VIII (his Oscar winner), Mutiny on the Bounty, Rembrandt, and an episode of Wagon Train.
