"We're really gonna have new neighbors?"
Beaming down at his son, Professor Birch ruffled ten year old Brendan's albino hair fondly, mirth trimming the jovial man's voice as he answered his question. "Ha ha, yes we are, Brendan. A friend of mine is moving here from Johto to be a Gym Leader over in Petalburg, and he's bringing his family here to live in Littleroot."
Brendan pushed his father's hand to the side with both of his little ones, peeking out from under with curiosity sparkling in his eyes. "What's his family like? Do you think they'll have any kids I could play with?" His voice was laden with excitement, and for a good reason; Brendan never had had too many real friends in his life, and ever since his mother passed away when he was merely six he had almost no one else to be with, save his father.
"How about we leave that as a surprise, eh? C'mon, let's get you and Neptune cleaned up; you've been busy out there today." Looking down at his dirty outfit, Brendan smiled. To him, mud on the shirt was a sign of a job well done, and he had been striving his best with his Mudkip to help his father document every Pokemon in the nearby Routes.
"Okay dad! I'll go get changed! Neptune, go wash off in the tub, alright?" Barking it's understanding, Brendan's Mudkip partner ran off to the bathroom on it's stubby legs, looking forward to a nice warm bath. Later that afternoon, Brendan sat up in his bedroom by the window with Neptune napping on his bed nearby. He watched with growing anticipation on the arrival of this new family.
And what he hoped would be a new friend.
