What I want us to see is that being “a loving person” is not about popularity but rather personal behavior. It’s about how we treat each person in our path. -- I sometimes picture a system that operates on the principle of more people in my life = I’m a more loving person. I’ve heard other introverts express something similar. But love isn’t about the number of people we have in our lives, “likes” we get online, guests who come to our wedding (or funeral), or contacts in our phone. Our social schedules aren’t a measuring stick for our spirituality. If you want to grow in love, measure nothing. Instead, make one connection, have one conversation, show kindness to one person at a time—which introverts naturally do well.

Childlike faith is probably far messier than I have thought it to be. Children are drawn to the dirt like little magnets. And they're not afraid to touch it, to dig fingers in deep, to have it splatter all over them. They're not so preoccupied with keeping themselves clean that they miss the experience and the wonder. What if we lived that way, too? Not holding back from the disarray of life and relationships. But instead, diving right into the middle of it all? Children also lack our grown-up self-consciousness. There's no 'I' when they're fully engaged in play with each other. There's only the enthusiastic and rowdy 'we.' No insecurity. No second guessing. No wondering what anyone thinks. Just reckless abandon to the moment and the magic of whatever is in front of them. This leads to a particular kind of fearlessness.

Practice doesn’t make perfect, because that’s impossible this side of heaven. Practice makes a person who will try again, and that’s what God desires. No matter how far or how often you’ve fallen, you can still get back up today. Can your heart hear the cheers as you do?

Fear might tempt us to hide, but it’s not too late to show up. Insecurity might point out our imperfections, but grace invites us to come as we are. Shame might tell us to try harder, but our worth is an unearned gift.
