Misha-Samuel Lazarev, a Pereslavl-Zalessky-born holy fool, is a highly revered saint in the diocese of Yaroslavl. The middle name “Samuel” was assigned to him after the death of Misha’s spiritual mentor Samuel, the hieromonk of the Nikolsky Monastery. Legend has it that Mikhail was a foreseer whom common folk loved and respected for his advice and support in difficult circumstances. It is uncommon to see the icon of the holy fool in Russian iconography, which makes the featured image especially valuable.
