A simple warding charm for my front door

After listening to @breelandwalker's podcast episode about home warding, I wanted to try out an idea I've had for a while about a warding charm for my front door using stinging nettle. Warding my whole house isn't something I have the energy for right now, but I enjoyed working this little spell to give myself a little peace of mind. Please listen to the episode if you haven't (Hex Positive, Ep. 024 - Warding A Witchy Home) because she goes into detail about what home wards can and can't do, how to work them, etc. All very good information!

Also please note that I don't have a lot of experience and I haven't tested this spell before, but I wanted to share it anyway and in the future I'll update the post with any insights or experiences that might come up.

For this spell I used: - a small drawstring bag (mine was crocheted by my grandmother some years ago) - dried stinging nettle - one clove of garlic

I started by gathering my materials, then centered and grounded myself. I cleansed the immediate space around me as well as the bag (lately I've enjoyed burning dried juniper for this purpose), then took a pinch of the dried nettles and held it in my hands, asking the plant to please assist me in protecting my home from anything or anyone seeking to cause harm, while allowing friends and family and anyone else who we invite or welcome to our house safe passage through the front door. I visualized a powerful patch of tall nettles growing in front of my house, around the door, and wrapping around the door handle. I also visualized any person or entity seeking to cause harm feeling prickles and itching upon approaching the house or touching the door handle, and them retreating from the house. Then I imagined the nettles drawing back and allowing friends and family to come to the door safely. I charged the nettles with this intention and placed them in the bag.

I did much the same thing with the garlic but the visualization that came to me was more like a glowing golden light encompassing the door. Then I also put the garlic into the bag, closed the bag, and held it in my hands while charging it with my intention more strongly, holding gratitude for the plants for assisting me in the working. I then hung the bag on a nail above my front door (on the inside), placed my hands on the door, and visualized the nettle patch and golden light one more time. To my surprise the imagined nettles kind of decided by themselves to grow all around my house and garden, even around my garden shed, though I didn't specifically ask them to, which to me was a lovely sign that the nettle spirit was eager to help me. These days I usually close my spells by saying "make it so" because I'm obsessed with Star Trek, then I reversed my grounding and centering.

Please let me know if you try it out! I haven't worked with nettles much in my magic so far, but I can't wait to get to know them more intimately as summer rolls around.

Warding for the Home

This is a short warding spell used to cleanse/banish and ward the home at the same time. REMEMBER:  All chants can be done in your head, all words said in a different language can be said in your native, and all spells are modifiable. Requires:

-disposable paper towel

-sage

-moonwater (preferably waning moon)

-paint brush or finger for applying

First, heat up a cup of moonwater and 1 tbsp of sage. Get the paintbrush and start painting a warding sigil with the moonwater/sage (I used a triangle with a plus in the middle of it, my personal favorite ward) on every surface of your house you feel should be warded. While you’re painting each one, chant:

Protect this home from all things I find negative.

Ablutus. (Cleanse in Latin)

Repeat for every sigil done. Then, go around with a paper towel, wipe away the remaining sage and water and chant:

You are gone,

You are forever here.

Remember your intentions.

Adsertus. (Protection)

Take the paper towel and set it on a burnable surface. Focus intently on the fire and the crinkling of the paper, think of the sigils washing away and the feeling of protection. Chant: 

Burn, Burn away,

But stay where you must. 

Me protege. (Protect me)

An oldie, but a goodie: the Rowan cross

Today on my romps around London, I found a twig from a Rowan tree. A tree of so much magical potential that one of its many nicknames is, in fact, the Witch Tree.

How could I NOT do a spell with it?

So today, I did a little home warding charm called a Rowan cross, for warding the home from negative energy and ne’er-do-wells. This particular charm goes back a long way here in Britain – a few hundred years, at the best guess. I reckon you could also carry this with you while traveling, both to protect your things and to keep from getting lost – another use of the good ole’ Rowan tree.

Here she is, with instructions to follow:

For this, you need only two things

A twig at least 6 inches long, or 2 twigs of 3 inches or more, either from a Rowan tree or any other tree you associate with protection and the home.

Red thread, string, or yarn

(optional) Glue

You can do any sort of mood-setting ritual you like. Personally, I simply lit a while candle.

If you have one 6+ inch twig, cut it in half. Once you’ve got two little twigs to work with, decide whether you’d like to glue them in the middle to make a cross to help you get started. Personally, I didn’t bother. They stayed fine after my first couple rounds with the yarn.

Tie them together in the middle loosely with your yarn. Now, we wind the yarn!

So as not to make this stupidly linguistically awkward, I found a nice little diagram on how to do this if you’re unfamiliar with this pattern. Basically, you go over to the right side of the twig, under to the left side.

You can cover as much or as little of the twigs as you like. Personally, I just went until I felt it was done.

I tied the yarn around one of the rungs and passed it over the flame, asking it to protect my home.

Then you can hang it in front of a window, a door, whatever entrance you’d like to protect.

Another rant

Okay, so everyone from my home world has somehow caught wind that I haven't gone to my new ward (i had to switch because of the time change in the new year). 

I had 4 people at school asking me how the new ward is. UGGG. I know they are being nice but I mean, it just kind of reminds me how I can't go any more. I tried to explain to them why I haven't been going but I know I sounded angry at them. I'm sorry about that. 

I just don't know what to do....
