Get on the Green Train: Creating Your Own Home Garden

Being in the maximum city with minimum space is everyone’s woe. However, that shouldn’t stop you from creating a luscious green corner in your humble abode. Home gardens are totally on-trend today, and so easy to create. Whether it is a few plants in a corner or a vine-covered balcony; going green sure has its perks.

Interested in starting your own gardening adventure? Here are some tips and tricks to help you out:

1) Know where you want it: Whether you choose a medium-sized wall or a balcony space, deciding upon a spot for your garden will smoothen out the process of planning it. Do make sure that it is a spot that gets a lot of sunlight and air. Damp dark spaces will only make your garden seem dull.

2)    Maximise your space: If you want to pack as much green as possible into your garden, make the most of every corner. Use an old shoe rack to organize your plants, and line it with mason jars full of tiny saplings. You can also hang potted plants from the windowsill to save space.

3) Skip the mess: Different plants have different water requirements, and they usually don’t need a lot of attention. Consult a gardener or the Internet to learn more about what the plants in your garden need. Usually, most plants need to be watered twice a day during summers and once during winters.

Not yet convinced? Well, there’s some serious perks to going green. Here are a few:

1. Because its eco-friendly: Life in India guarantees you regular exposure to smoke and pollution. A home garden is an easy way to combat this, and bring some fresh air into your life. Best part: it won’t break the bank too much either. Plants such as tulsi, lavender, and the areca palm are fairly cheap, and they also produce oxygen at night! So, invest in some of these, and you can sleep cradled in clean air.

2.     Because you can grow your own food: Who needs a farmer’s market, when you have your own little home garden? Chillies, tomatoes, fresh herbs and lemons are all easy plants to maintain in small spaces. So go ahead and create your own little Farmville — its clean eating at its finest!

3. Because it beautifies your home: Green tones add freshness to any room, and so playing with natural elements is an easy way to spruce up your home aesthetic! Whether you put gorgeous little succulents on your coffee table, or a creeper entwining along your windowsill, adding that lush green element to your home will definitely give it that nurturing and peaceful vibe.
