Remembering Drew Struzan
Drew Struzan was one of the most celebrated and influential movie poster artists of all time, renowned for his richly painted, hyper-realistic yet deeply emotive compositions that became synonymous with blockbuster cinema from the late 1970s through the 2000s. His work helped define the visual identity of modern Hollywood during the golden age of hand-painted posters before digital design took over.
By the late 2000s, Hollywood's shift toward digital posters and Photoshop-based marketing pushed traditional artists like Struzan out of mainstream demand. He officially retired in 2008, though he occasionally returned for special projects such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Hellboy II.
Struzan's influence on pop culture is enormous. His style inspired generations of illustrators, from contemporary poster artists like Paul Shipper and Kyle Lambert to countless digital fan art creators around the world. Many filmmakers and fans still view his posters not as promotional tools, but as works of cinematic art that captured emotion, imagination, and narrative in a single frame.
In March 2025, Struzan's wife revealed that he had been living with Alzheimer's disease for several years and that it had progressed to the point where he could no longer paint or sign his work.
Drew Struzan passed away on October 13, 2025, at the age of 78. The announcement of his death prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the film and art worlds, as well as from fans like myself. Many recognized that Struzan's posters were more than marketing. They were icons of visual storytelling that defined an era.
No official cause of death beyond his Alzheimer's condition has been made public.
His passing marks the loss of one of the last true masters of the painted movie-poster tradition in mainstream Hollywood. Countless admirers have rightly called him a "giant" in the field.
I had the honor of chatting with Drew from time to time over the years, though not recently due to his declining health. He was a good man, and I am truly going to miss his work.

I feel like everyone was either a peter pan (2003) kid or a hook (1991) kid
Is it really a sick day comfort movie rewatch if you don’t think a little too hard about that film you’ve sixty million times since you were a kid and make yourself cry about it? “you know that place between sleeping and waking when ere you still remember dreaming? That’s where I’ll always love you”
“a tear for every happy thought.” “One for me?” “Yes”
“That’s MY Jack!”
“Hello, boy”
“This house has gotten to me! Thank God we were children in the rooms Peter!”
“I wish… I had a dad just like you”
and I’m just here, trying not to cry myself into a coughing fit but Robin Williams really did act his socks off for this (and so did everyone else). How dare they do this to me like the outlook of adult and the melancholy of lost friendship and childhood haunting the narrative were things I would never have the watching comprehension to catch.
