Getting infected with a hookworm doesn't sound like something you should do on purpose, but if patients can stomach the idea, their health c
In the first clinical trial of its kind, a team led by scientists from James Cook University in Australia inoculated volunteers with human hookworm larvae (Necator americanus) to see if these parasites can improve their metabolic health. The two-year study included 24 participants, each of whom showed heightened insulin resistance at the start of the trial. By the end of the investigation, researchers found those who were infected with hookworms showed a significant reduction in their insulin resistance scores compared to those who were given a placebo. That's not enough to recommend the practice just yet, but the findings join those of another pioneering study published in 2021 that infected participants with hookworms and found it benefited their gut's microbiome.

So, my dad's dog (greyhound) was getting these sores/lesions on her back. She was finally diagnosed with hookworm and the meds for that have treated it. Like by the time she was due for the second dose the irritated bits had started to come back, then they went away. My question is: how on earth can an intestinal parasite be causing wounds on the back? It really feels like witchcraft.
gettingvetted here.
The condition you’re referring to is cutaneous larval migrans. Dogs and cats are the standard host for the hookworm and the worms usually complete their life cycle in the intestines and pass eggs in the feces, which hatch into larvae and are then picked up orally by other dogs or cats. However, any ground that is contaminated with egg-filled feces soon becomes host to the baby (larval) stages of the hookworm, which can penetrate the feet of animals and migrate under the skin, causing sores. It is actually much less common in dogs than it is in humans, which can get cutaneous hookworms from walking in contaminated sand or mud (and this is one reason why it is so important to have dogs and cats on monthly hookworm prevention). After the larval hookworms penetrate the skin, they migrate via blood to the lungs, where they access the trachea and are swallowed. Similar to those that gained entry through fecal-oral routes, these larvae then end up in the intestine. Usually the immune response in humans stops the hookworms before they reach the lungs, but in dogs and cats they can often slip by the immune system un-noticed.
When the larval hookworms penetrate the skin, they often cause a lot of irritation. Your dog could have rolled in some contaminated dirt and gotten the larvae in her back, or she could have experienced somatic migration, in which larvae reenter the blood vessels in the lungs and travel to the muscles or organs, where they become encysted and their development is stopped.
Parasites like these are just one of many ways that vets have to learn about human health in addition to animal health, so we can warn owners of the potential side effects of having a dog with hookworms!

GALTx eNews: The Horrors of the Modern Hookworm!
Hookworms are increasingly common and more difficult than ever to clear from our greyhounds. According to a study by the University of Georgia, today’s hookworm is a hybrid resistant to all treatments currently approved in the US. Hookworms can even 'hibernate’ and re-infect a greyhound after the treatment clears the active infection.
After reviewing many combinations of parasitic medications, Bill Feeman, DVM at Animal Medical Centre, Medina, Ohio, recommends a treatment regime that appears to be the most successful:
Coraxis, or Advantage Multi, for 6 months (applied topically once a month)
Pyrantel Paramote based on each dog's weight, given 2 weeks after the Coraxis or Advantage Multi for 6 months
Recheck fecal 2-3 weeks after the last medication administration.
Coraxis, or Advantage Multi, is a preventative for heartworms and intestinal parasites. GALT's veterinarians at VCA Preston Park Animal Hospital in Dallas are on board with this protocol. Sometimes, with this protocol, it takes 6 months or more to show a consistent clear fecal. Click here to read Dr. Feeman's memo dated November 1, 2019, or click here to read Dr. Feeman's "Greyhound Medical Idiosyncrasies" which addresses hookworms on page 8, Item 32.
If the Greyhound you are adopting is positive to hookworms, GALT adopters receive the medication doses required and a schedule of when to administer them in their adoption packets. Please follow this schedule religiously! At the conclusion of the six-month treatment, GALT pays for the fecal if you schedule it through GALT at VCA Preston Park Animal Hospital. If the test is negative, we recommend rechecking again in two weeks with your vet to confirm the negative results. To help minimize the possibility of re-infestation and spreading hookworms to other dogs in your household, please always ‘pick up’ after your greyhound immediately after each elimination. Thank you for your assistance with finding a solution to keep our fur babies happy and healthy!
