Hope’s birthday is February 22nd, which corresponds to October 8th.
Why does it seem like Hope Borgin has been with Davey Gudgeon a lot? Doesn't she know his status? Pretty faces don't make up for blood.
Uh oh. Will Hope be the next of the Pureblood elite to stray in the name of love…or lust? She’s always been a bit on the quiet side. Maybe her thoughts have been less about her studies and more about the grass being greener on the other side?
Congratulations Hannah on earning the role of Hope Borgin!
The very first thing I really liked was how she’s secretive, but she doesn’t have trust issues. Although the matter can be played out extremely well, it also can turn into a cliche. So, I think there is something very unique about her just sort of falling into that pattern with no real reason to back it up. I hope we get her sister soon and I’m so thrilled to have yet another student! - Admin Mel

Out of Character:
Name: Hannah
Preferred Pronouns: she/her
Age: 16 (17 in a week and a half, if that counts for anything)
Time Zone: NZT
Activity Level: 7-8/10. I do have school and all that jazz, but aside from that I’m quite active.
How did you find us? The promo blog showed up on my dash a couple of times, and I thought I’d come and check it out
Have you played this character before? Nope!
Which HP canon character is your favorite? The Malfoy family, and I also have a very soft spot for Minerva McGonagall.
In Character:
Name: Hope Catherine Borgin
Hope -“one of the three Christian virtues (Faith, Hope and Charity)”
Catherine - “pure”
Borgin - unknown, possible derivation of “burglar”
Age & Birthday: 17 - September 20, 1961
“Being a Virgo born on September 20th, your reserve is almost as well-developed as your sensitivity. While your peers and co-workers may categorize you as shy or timid, this is only because you are more comfortable working in the background. Similarly to your lack of comfort with the spotlight, you also find it difficult to open up about your feelings and inner thoughts. Luckily, you are very open with your loved ones and can express your most intimate thoughts to your friends and family with ease.”
Year: Seventh Year
House: Slytherin
Expand on the positive and negative traits given in the bio:
+ RESOURCEFUL; Adaptable, that’s what she was. Though following a recipe was preferred, Hope had no problem creating amazing dishes from whatever she could find, and it quickly became a skill that she applied to many aspects of her life. Put her in a difficult and unusual situation and she wouldn’t like it one bit, but she would also find her way out. Hope’s resourcefulness, however deep it may be hidden, would always eclipse her fears and take her by surprise. Dealing with two younger sisters certainly provided Hope with ample opportunity to take initiative (and more often than not, keep them all out of trouble). She was known for her exceptional ability to obtain the best possible outcome of any given situation, and so when the Sorting Hat suggested Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff there was no way she was going to let that happen. It may not appear so at first, but Hope will use whatever she has available and do whatever it takes, and clearly that was enough evidence for the Hat to finally place her in Slytherin.
+ EXCELLENT LIAR; Covering up the truth was something you had to be good at when you were trying to sneak vegetables into your younger sisters’ food. It was also practically a requirement when you had Mercy Borgin as your older sister, who took every opportunity to comment about the Ravenclaw boy she saw you with in Hogsmeade. Hope was never really the best role model when it came to telling the truth, but she sure was good at convincing people she was. For the most part, she uses it to keep herself on the right side of everyone, be it her family, friends or teachers. While it has certainly proven useful, Hope likes how it allows her to keep herself in the shadows. Whether it was an attempt to stop a rumour about her or her family spreading, or simply an excuse as to why she couldn’t go out that weekend, the little white lie was Hope’s specialty. It was almost like a bad habit, once she started it seemed impossible to stop. Hope sometimes wishes her instinct wasn’t to lie, but then again if it’s never hurt anyone, being an ‘excellent convincer’, as Hope likes to put it, can’t be a bad thing.
+ SMART; Hope was a curious young girl, always eager to learn something new. To her, it hardly mattered whether it was mundane or exciting, she found learning a thrill. Not surprisingly, she took to Hogwarts like a duck to water. It was commonly known that the words ‘Hope’ and ‘study’ were practically synonymous and that a lot of her time was spent in the library. While others were proudly flashing their grades around, Hope was the one in the corner quietly working away, and she passed all of her OWLs with mostly Outstandings, and nothing below an Exceeds Expectations. Her intelligence is one of Hope’s traits she’s prouder of, and while she certainly doesn’t show it off, she doesn’t make any conscious effort to hide how hard she works or how well she does either. With NEWTs coming up this year, Hope is certain that she will be spending more time in the library than ever. After all, she was never one to rest on her laurels.
- SECRETIVE; When she was younger, Hope quickly learnt that some things are better kept to yourself. However, as she has grown up Hope seems to have stuck with this idea, perhaps a little too much. She often finds herself sneaking around and withholding information for no real reason, and it tends to make people suspicious. While she doesn’t have trust issues, she prefers to only share secrets with those whom she is incredibly close to, and even then she is reluctant. Often concealing her feelings, she knows that it makes her appear cold and distant and others may be wary of her, but Hope likes it that way. She has her small group of most trusted people, and even then they don’t know everything. With Hope it seems to be that someone is either a close friend or an acquaintance; there is no in-between. This means that most of what people ‘know’ about her stems from the reputation Mercy created for the both of them, and for Hope it is sometimes less work to simply pretend it’s true, rather than to convince them otherwise.
- QUIET; Hope grew up in the shadow of her older sister, Mercy. She was always the loud, outspoken one, and as a result Hope seemed to fall behind her. She never had to demand respect from others, as Mercy had already done that for her. Fortunately, the shadows suited Hope. She preferred to think, rather than speak, and she was always quite shy as a child. After all, when you have an older sister who can speak for you, there’s really no need to do it yourself. Confrontation has also been something Hope consistently tries to avoid, as it’s not in her nature. Because of this, Hope often finds it difficult to stand up for herself, and since Mercy left Hogwarts two years ago she has withdrawn into her shell and appears to be sticking with her group of close friends, hardly interacting with many outside of her circle. Never one to speak up or volunteer in class, she was a keen listener, and absorbed all the information around her. If you can coax Hope onto a topic she is passionate about she can talk a mile a minute, but other than that she is very soft-spoken and naturally allows others to dominate conversation.
- CONFLICTED; Internal conflict seems to have ruled Hope’s life from day one. She’s always been an over-analyzer, but lately it has become more prominent. Hope was never one to act on impulse, and because of this she will consider all sides of the story and all consequences before taking any action. However, this often means that she takes no action at all, and Hope often appears lost, never knowing which way to turn. Where her sister was always the calm and collected one, Hope struggles to deal with the mismatched thoughts in her head, though she tries her best to keep it to herself. She seems to be slightly on edge a lot of the time, simply because ‘clearing her head’ just isn’t an option. Ambiguity is her specialty, and even as a young girl her answer to the inevitable what’s your favourite colour? question always involved at least two, if not three options. Once Hope comes to a decision she will not budge, so most of the time she chooses not to decide, even if that does result in constant inner turmoil. Consequently, Hope lets others make minor decisions for her, and to an outsider it would seem like she simply allows other people to control her life. Although Hope knows this isn’t true, she is becoming more and more aware of how it looks to others, and it scares her a little.
History:
Hope Catherine Borgin grew up as one of four Pureblood-raised girls, though if it weren’t for their strikingly similar looks you wouldn’t have guessed they were all related. Hope was the second eldest, and was always closest to her older sister Mercy. Even as a toddler she followed her around everywhere, and they spent most of their time hiding in the corners of Borgin and Burke’s. That is, until the day Mercy inadvertently burned off a man’s hand. Hope hid in her room and cried for days, and she became absolutely terrified of her dad’s shop, scared that she would face the same fate. From that day onwards Hope insisted on staying home with her mother, never going near the shop if she could help it. Once her younger sisters came along, she used them as an excuse to stay in the house and help her mother, and Hope began to develop a love for cooking. Hope became more of a 'second mother’ to her younger sisters, and consequently she never quite forged the same type of close friendship with them as she had with Mercy.
As she grew older, she slowly restored her relationship with her older sister, even the basis of it was her acting as her sister’s shadow. Hope was excited when it came time to attend Hogwarts - it meant she would get to be with her sister again. Her parents never stopped talking about how proud they were that Mercy was in Slytherin, and Hope decided that she would be too. Though the Sorting Hat suggested otherwise at first, Hope was determined that she was going to be in the house of the snakes. Mostly Hope was afraid of what would happen if she wasn’t sorted into Slytherin, how her family would react. She tried bargaining with the hat, then begging, but it wasn’t until she burst into a fit of internal rage and swore to set it on fire that the Hat finally chose Slytherin. Hope was proud of herself that day, she was sure that if she could convince the Hat she belonged, her family would never question it either. Not surprisingly, Hope found it a relief to be in the same house as Mercy, and as she soon discovered her family name had quite the reputation.
While Hope was in her first year, Mercy was in her fourth, and Hope soon found that a lot had been done in those three years that Mercy was at Hogwarts alone. Not only was Hope immediately asked to join the Slug Club, but the other houses seemed to shy away from her in the corridors, accompanied by whispers of “watch out, that’s the other Borgin girl”. Hope didn’t particularly like the attention it garnered, but it also meant that she was seldom approached by members of other houses. Everyone knew Hope’s name, but they didn’t know her, and she didn’t mind the solitude at all. Rather, it allowed her to choose her own small circle of friends within her house, and she held on to them tightly. Margaret Yaxley in particular is the one friend Hope is closest to, and is the only person Hope will actually consider confiding in. They were friends from day one, and even if it was naturally established that Hope was to once again be a follower, she was happy. It suited her better, and though her and Margaret have very different natures they complemented each other in a way that has made their friendship last.
For the last few years Hope has felt a little lost. Mercy had always been a constant in Hope’s life, and returning to Hogwarts in her fifth year without her older sister by her side was strange. While they had never been as close as they once were, Mercy’s presence was like a security blanket, and Hope was scared everything would change. Thankfully it didn’t; everyone was still just as wary of the Borgins as always. Instead Hope focused on her studies, determined to get the best OWL results as possible. Now, going into her seventh year, Hope is more afraid than ever. She’s sensed a change around her, everyone seems to be more wary when stepping out into Diagon Alley, and even Mercy has been acting strange lately. On one hand Hope can’t wait to get back to Hogwarts and distance herself from the imminent commotion, but at the same time she is scared of what will happen while she’s away. Rumours have been flying and she doesn’t quite know how to cope. The one emotion that seems to be a constant in Hope’s life lately is fear, yet she knows she can’t explain to her sister how she feels. When it comes to war, the two sisters’ viewpoints have always been slightly too different to understand one another.
The Details (THESE ARE ALL OPTIONAL TO FILL OUT):
Wand:
Hawthorn, Phoenix feather, 9", flexible
Hope has a shorter wand, which is easily a reflection of both her stature and personality. Her adaptability and indecisiveness led her to a flexible wand, and these same traits also explain her wand wood, hawthorn. Hawthorn “makes a strange, contradictory wand” and “seems most at home with a conflicted nature”, and if Hope’s inability to choose her favourite colours was anything to go by, 'conflicted’ seemed to fit her perfectly. Phoenix feather is the rarest core type, yet it shows the most initiative. Though many witches and wizards find this off-putting, Hope often finds that when her instincts take over her wand knows what to do, and it suits her perfectly.
Amortentia:
A freshly opened ink pot, banana cake (particularly her mother’s recipe), and the white roses she always kept in her bedroom at home.
Boggart:
Hope’s boggart shows her trapped in a box that continuously gets smaller and smaller. While others presumed Hope had claustrophobia (which isn’t entirely false, Hope doesn’t particularly like crowds or very small spaces), her boggart was a bit more symbolic than that. Instead, Hope’s greatest fear is being trapped. Whether it is being trapped by her family, her friends, or more often than not trapped in her own mind, Hope always likes it when there is more than one way. Being a naturally indecisive person, keeping her options open was something Hope ensured she did for her own peace of mind.
Patronus:
Hope is unable to cast a patronus, though if she were to it would take the form of a mouse.
Whilst mice are typically known for their timid nature and being uncomfortable in the open, they are also incredibly resourceful and self-reliant. Hope embodies the quiet, compliant character of a mouse, content to hide in the shadows. However if she were able to cast her patronus she would perhaps become afraid, as mice often fall prey to hungry snakes.
Extracurricular Activities: Member of the Slug Club
Extras:
Subjects:
Hope is taking five NEWTs: Charms, Transfiguration, Potions, Arithmancy, and Herbology. Herbology is her favourite subject, and she is one of the only Slytherin students to take it at a NEWT level. Hope could have also taken the Defence Against the Dark Arts NEWT, but she chose to 'focus her attention on fewer subjects' - in reality she never liked the subject, and for her ignorance is bliss.
Quidditch:
While Hope has never touched a broom since the flying lesson in first year, she is an avid Quidditch fan and never misses a game, even if it takes place early on a Saturday morning. She supports the Falmouth Falcons like her father, and occasionally when she was younger the two of them would go along to the home matches.
The Greenhouses:
If you can’t find Hope in the library, you’re most likely to find her out in the greenhouses. By the time Hope reached her third year, her 'secret’ love of Herbology wasn’t such a secret anymore after she had topped her class, and she began visiting the greenhouses regularly. Now she often helps out there, particularly when the second years begin learning about mandrakes. Over the years she has struck up a friendship with Professor Sprout, and Hope finds that caring for the plants allows her to ignore all of her own worries for a short while. She has started up her own garden at home (though with more 'traditional’ plants that her mother takes care of while she’s at school), and it has become a little tradition of hers to bring a plant from home to Professor Sprout at the start of each school year.
Absolutely! We would really love to see our numbers of students increase before we hit September. It is currently July, so we still have plenty of time left to gather up lots of students to go back to school together. Never fear though, we do have things in place to keep them interacting with those who have graduated. - Admin Mel
