ornament - noun: Decoration that is added to increase the beauty of something.
The Fawning is a bit of a weird character for me. Originally part of a very short-lived story concept - something might come of it, I don't know - they are a transgender carnival entertainer in the 1890s who was killed and brought back to life sort of Frankenstein'd with parts of a goat.
Not a deer as the name would suggest. I suppose they're more of a Fauning. Perhaps I should call them that from now on. They ended up being a bit of a mascot for me, a self-portrait in a way.
Tattoos had a surge in popularity in this period and as a carnival worker, they would have no reason not to go wild. It was enjoyable researching old photos of tattoos of the era for this piece, as they have a specific style to them, and to find a slogan for their ship piece: Audi, Vide, Tace is part of a Latin proverb meaning, "See, hear, be silent if you would live in peace", now known through its connections with Freemasonry. As for the faun, they are mute (well, they can bleat), and thus.
As a trans person, it's hard to look back on our histories. Trans and intersex people of the past often could only exist openly in the world of freak shows, and we're still perceived that way today. This narrative was informed by my experience and thoughts on that, and it's quite hard to find work by artists - given that most of them are "normal" for lack of a better word - which is empathetic with the "freaks".
The Residents' "Freak Show" is not one of those works, not as an album, but it gives it a red hot go. I particularly like the opening track and its sombre message: "Everyone comes to the freak show, but nobody laughs when they leave."
