Red horned lizard on a red prairie! Also called horny toads and horned frogs for their round bodies and short, squat heads, these little guys are masters of camouflage. They’re often sluggish and easy to catch, especially the big ones- they remain still when first approached, trying to blend into the background to avoid detection. If that doesn’t work, they run in short bursts before stopping abruptly to confuse predators. They also puff their bodies up to appear larger and more spiny, so harder to swallow.
