so imagine Joan is going home late one night. she’s far too tired to walk, so she takes the subway (the tube? monorail? i’m calling it the subway/train because “tube” sounds way too funny to take seriously). it’s the dead of the night, like two in the morning, and she’s all alone in the dark, underground platform waiting for the train, where no one could hear her screams if something were to happen...
she tries not to think about that, though. she just plays on her phone as she waits, shifting back and forth from foot to foot and adjusting her scarf several times. all she can hear is the faint hum of the escalator, the distant echo of mechanical noises and nesting birds, and the whisper to her right.
“Psst. Over here.”
Joan froze. there was...some guy poking his head out of the tunnels. he was a filthy looking man, probably in his forties and clearly homeless. he gave her a yellow smile with several teeth missing. Joan shivered and tried not to look at him, but he didn’t go away.
there was laughter from the tunnels. a moment later, another disgusting man pokes his head out. they both catcall and whistle at Joan, telling her how pretty she was and to come hang out with them. Joan could feel tears of fear and anxiety welling up in her eyes as she tried to just look forward, but out of the corner of her vision, she saw that a third man had joined the group, although he was hunched over and had dead fish eyes that gave her chills.
the sound of the train approaching was like a rope ladder dropped from heaven. Joan walked to the edge of the platform, shaking with every step, and threw up when she peeked back over to where the men had been.
the small group was walking back into the tunnel, but the second man in the back was holding something in his hands. a head.
just a head.
memories of Anne and Katherine’s executions come rushing back fast; Joan vomits again, more from the remembrance of her trauma, rather than out of terror and disgust this time. she enters the train as quick as she could when the doors opened and hunches over in a seat, sweating despite the cold temperature. she felt like she could barely breathe. she knew she should call the police or at least tell the conductor of the train, but she couldn’t move at all, and she was sure she wouldn’t be able to speak. so she just sat there, trembling, and watched as the men, pressed against the inside of the tunnel and staring at her, flashed past by through the window when the train began to move.
she would not be taking the subway at night for awhile.
*Smashes down door and stumbles into room* HOLY SHIT DUDE GO WATCH OVERLORD RIGHT NOW
