Last Audition City - Memphis!
Here we go, last stop on the audition tour! Excited to see what Memphis has to offer! Love that Wayne Brady is the guest judge today!
"Blu Print" from Dragon House (aka Cyrus' house/ crew) is up first. Love the clips from the house! Looks like such a fun lifestyle. Dorian Hector is a great animator. I really like his style and his little looks at the judges/ camera. The little isolation moves were awesome, and it was just mesmerizing! Mary was super into it and Wayne Brady jumped up immediately to give him a standing ovation. And Mary dropped an F-bomb? YES. Vegas!
Curtis Holland is an adorable little tapper. I just wanna pinch his little cheeks. His feet are flying, and he's smiling the whole way through. Yeah he's a little spazzy, but it totally worked for him and he showed his personality and a lot of skills. And he got a big ol' hug from Wayne Brady! He's off to choreo, which is totally fair.
I'm not sure how I feel about this whole car accident reenactment thing, but damn Tucker Knox can dance. He's got this whole aura about him, and I honestly think he would have even if I didn't know that he almost died in a car accident fairly recently. Such control, grace, and understated power about him. Clearly straight to Vegas, and I think Top 20 as well.
Good dancer montage includes a crazy gymnastic-centric routine! Loved all 3! I am really loving these mini montage sets they've added this season. Gives a little more than the half second view, even if we don't get an real intro to them. I'm sure they'll feature them more in Vegas (YAY Vegas)!
Courtney Thurston and her dance dad are just adorable. Father-daughter stories get me every time. She is adorable on the mic, which is at its lowest level. Can't go wrong dancing to Celine, right? And she doesn't. Such a great audition all-around. Great technique, gymnastics elements, hair flips, and a little sparkle about her that's great to watch. Love that her dad ended up marrying her dance teacher too! Great side story. Watching them dance together is just precious, and they both have gluckenschweine (which is apparently a good luck thing that they do in Opera - thanks Jeremy, my trusty sidekick, for that little tidbit). Vegas, duh!
Bad dancer montage because why?
Not sure about this Mongolian Bowl Dance, nor am I sure about the spelling, so I'm not even going to try. I did enjoy her horse impression though, and she's cute on the mic. Ok Shanshan Qia-Rothlissberger, show us what you got. I'm not sure it's enough actual dance, but I did enjoy watching her. She's got the brightest little smile and the audience and judges love her. Totally agree with Nigel about her "tranquil quality" though. She's on to choreo, which is definitely fine by me.
Well Nico Greetham is a little teen bopper hearthrob waiting to happen. I like him, but there's something a little snappy and spastic about his style that I don't love. He's still good though, and he's super patient throughout all of Mary's screaming. He didn't utter a single word, but somehow he's going straight to Vegas. I guess we'll meet him later?
Elyse Freilinger is a trapeze instructor at Santa Monica Pier (shoutout to Cali)! She's got such strength in her movement, but so light and fluid at the same time. She was great to watch, definitely a natural performer. I think we'll certainly see more of her in Vegas!
Nigel put poor little Shanshan through a lot of waiting, but she got a ticket to Vegas! And little Curtis too! So happy for both of them!
I am pretty excited about ballroom dancer Jenna Johnson, just from the previews. Legs for days on that one, sheesh. And she holds 4 National Titles? Ok then! She's just sexy right away, and talented too of course. Just a total pro. The judges didn't even say a word, just held up her Vegas ticket. There are some talented ballroom dancers this year, which is GREAT! Even the playing field with all the contemporary dancers a bit!
Novien Yarber has some awesome pants! Love them and love him too! He's got great technique and a great stage presence. Very dramatic, but not over the top. I loved it. And he was true to his word of being a very masculine dancer. Just go get your ticket, buddy!
Isabel Freiberger is another ballroom dancer doing Salsa this time. She's great! I like her technique and all the great tricks she threw in there. She's also really likable and fun to watch. They sent her to choreo to see what else she can do, but I'm sure she'll ace it.
I'm not sure how I feel about Caleb Brauner. He's a goober and the clips aren't so great. Like his sweater vest and bow tie though! His audition is super cute, and I was thoroughly entertained. His technique wasn't the strongest I've seen, but he is clearly trained. He reminded he of a cross between Will and Teddy Tedholme. And then here goes him and his dad. So great. this is the season of dance dads, and I am totally fine with that. He's going to Vegas - not sure how he'll do there, but he'd clearly ace choreo so why not?!
I am really enjoying Carlos who says he's "24, the same age as Mary". The guy after him is awesome as well! Great editing continues. Third guy has abs for days and is super hot. Oh and he can dance, too.
Larry Booze is wearing a very purple shirt and is one of the coolest dancers I've seen on this show. Crazy feet! He's a natural performer and his movements were so fluid. His in-dance personality was definitely better than his interview personality though. We'll see how he does in choreo. I'm rootin' for him for sure!
Well I can't say it's not weird to see Cyrus' ex-girlfriend (Jasmine Harper) talk about how much she misses him. But, great TV though. WOW. I hope she can retain some of the passion she had when she danced post-Nigel making her cry because that was awesome. Great song choice too (Destiny's Child cover of "Amazing Grace" anyone?). I think she'll go really far in this competition. Dare I say Top 20?!
Paige Pellicano isn't from Memphis, but her dad is an Elvis impersonator (and her mom owns a dance studio). She's super pretty and made for TV. She's certainly a good dancer technique-wise, but there's something off-putting when she dances. I think I just could feel her working hard with a bit of a strained smile. She's in choreo, which I'm sure she'll be fine with.
Choreo claimed Salsa dancer Isabell and Paige Pellicano, and Larry Booze withdrew to five his partner a better chance since he wasn't picking it up. Very selfless of him.
Ok so I just got chills from that Vegas Week preview. BEST EPISODE OF THE SEASON! OMG. Is that Chelsie Hightower I spot on the judging panel?! And tWitch?! It's going to be the best week ever, I can not express my excitement with anything less than this:
