“So, who haven’t you met?” Violet asks one day over tea. “In the house, I mean.”
“Anyone who died here before the seventies,” Billie Dean replies.
Violet looks puzzled. “You haven’t met Nora Montgomery? But she’s the one who, like, started this whole… thing. Don’t you wanna meet her?”
Billie shrugs. “I’ve tried to find her but she always hides from me. I know I could easily see her but I don’t want to frighten her and potentially make her lash out.”
“Makes sense, actually,” the girl reasons. “She only ever talks to Tate. Hates everyone else, except me sometimes. She doesn’t hide when I go down there.”
Billie hums, then she’s silent for a moment. “Will you take me to her?” she asks eventually.
“Sure," Violet sighs. "Why not.”
The basement smells strongly of rotting wood and mothballs. The only light comes from a flickering bulb on the staircase, but it doesn’t even reach halfway across the room. Billie has never liked it down here.
Violet stands in front of her, gently calling Mrs. Montgomery’s name into the menacing void before them. “Mrs. Montgomery? There’s someone here who wants to meet you.”
Silence for a moment. Then, from the other side of the room, a timid murmur of, “Violet?”
Violet smiles, looking almost proud. “Yeah! It’s Violet. I brought someone to see you. She’s nice.”
Silence again. Then, out of the shadows creeps Nora Montgomery. Her hands are clasped tightly around each other, eyes darting around nervously. Even in the minimal lighting, Billie can tell they’re the most brilliant shade of blue she’s ever seen. Mrs. Montgomery’s lips are painted red, intricately styled hair falling in loose ringlets around her pale face.
Billie Dean is certain she’s never seen anyone more beautiful. She’s stunned silent for a moment.
“Billie Dean Howard,” she eventually manages to greet, smiling in a way that she hopes is warm. “I’m a friend of Violet’s.”
Mrs. Montgomery gives her a once-over, and Billie tries her best not to shuffle awkwardly as the ghost’s eyes study her.
“That’s a man’s name,” Nora remarks after a tense silence.
Billie almost laughs, but she thinks that could scare the woman away, so she just keeps smiling. “It is,” she agrees with an easy tone.
Mrs. Montgomery narrows her eyes critically. “What do you want from me?”
“Nothing,” Billie assures her. “I just wanted to meet you, that’s all.”
“Oh,” the ghost breathes. Then, firmer, “Well. Now you have.”
“I have,” Billie echoes patiently. “Would you like me to leave you alone?”
Mrs. Montgomery thinks for a moment, then nods hesitantly.
“Okay,” Billie says. “It was lovely to meet you, Mrs. Montgomery.”
She turns and walks back up the stairs, Violet following right behind her.
When they’re back in the kitchen, Violet rolls her eyes and lets out a long, exasperated sigh. “Are you into her?” she accuses.
Billie can feel the blush rising in her face, and that’s all Violet needs before she's laughing.
