Leftists, Islamists, and Us

Bouteldja was extensively criticized in France after the release of her 2016 book, Whites, Jews, and Us. The book, which she presented as an act of "revolutionary love," presents the dismantling of Israel as a priority, praises Ahmadinejad for declaring that there are no homosexuals in Iran, and expresses unambiguous antisemitism.

When France's Left and Right reached the obvious conclusion that her ideas were appalling and denounced her work, Bouteldja claimed to be the victim of a witch-hunt.

Now, despite her severely damaged credibility in France, she has somehow successfully managed to build a new reputation in the United States as an inspiring activist and brilliant academic.

Bouteldja begins her 2016 book by adopting the French nationalist call for the shooting of philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre because of his opposition to French colonial control over Algeria, with Bouteldja wishing he could instead be shot for his Zionism. According to Bouteldja, Sartre "prolonged the anti-Semitic project in its Zionist form and participated in the construction of the greatest prison for Jews."

One of Bouteldja's chapters is addressed to "You, the Jews." She claims that Jews made a deal with the West "to be the weaponized wing of Western imperialism in the Arab world."

Bouteldja recounts that when her Algerian cousin asks who Hitler is, she thanks him for his "precious words," which taught her that "for the South, the Shoah [Holocaust] [...] is nothing but a 'detail.'"

She then generously offers a deal to Jews: if they "lay to rest these ideologies that glorify [them] as supreme victims" and "[..] recognize that Nazism's origins lie in the "trans-Atlantic slave trade and colonialism," then she will ally with them and recognize that the Holocaust "will never be a detail."

Bouteldja announces that former Iranian President Ahmadinejad is her "hero" for his infamous declaration at Columbia University that there are no homosexuals in Iran – Bouteldja called the scene "sublime" and saying she is "exalted" by his words. She attributes denunciations of Ahmadinejad to the fact he was an "arrogant indigenous man" speaking at "a transitional moment in the history of the West: its decline."

What I like about Genet is that he couldn’t care less about Hitler. And paradoxically, in my eyes, he succeeded in being a radical friend to the two great historical victims of the white order: the Jews and the colonized. There is no trace of philanthropy in him, either in favor of the Jews, the Black Panthers, or the Palestinians. Rather, there is a deaf anger against the injustice that was done to them by his own race. Didn’t he welcome the suppression of the death penalty in France with cynical indifference, while propriety called for sanctimonious emotions and celebrated this new step toward civilization? Genet’s position falls like a guillotine on the white man’s head: “As long as France does not engage in what has been called North-South politics, as long as it is not more concerned with immigrant workers or the former colonies, French politics doesn’t interest me at all. Whether or not white men’s heads get cut off or not doesn’t particularly interest me.” Because “creating a democracy in the country that used to be called the ‘metropole’ in relation to its colonies, is still to be creating a democracy that works against black countries, Arab countries, and others.…” There is something like an aesthetics in this indifference toward Hitler. It is visionary. Was it necessary to be a poet to achieve this grace? The main political groups’ compulsive eagerness to turn the Nazi leader into an accident of European history, and to reduce Vichy and all forms of collaboration to simple interlude, could not fool ‘the angel of Reims.’ I use the word “indifference.” Not empathy, not collusion. Could he revile Hitler and spare France, which had shown itself “rotten [in its] treatment of people in Indochina and Algeria, in Madagascar”? “Intoxicating” is how he described his feeling toward the French defeat against Hitler. How could one cheerfully rejoice at the end of Nazism all the while accommodating the genesis of colonialism and the pursuit of the imperialist project by other means? Could one recklessly isolate the Nazi moment from all other Western crimes and genocides? Did one have the moral right to take the Germans to task while offloading the French, the British, and the Americans?

Des passés que nous idealisons et qui rehaussent artificiellement l'estime que nous avons de nous mêmes au point parfois de singer nos maîtres et d'être condamnés à n'être que de pâles copies.

On ne peut pas penser le type de relations sociales, la famille, les rapports de genre ou la sexualité si on ne pense pas la nature de L'Etat et si on ne pense pas les rapports Nord/Sud, le néolibéralisme et ses métamorphoses.
