Finally got to do my Feast of Epiphany / Twelfth Night Three Kings House Blessing for the year. I combine the traditional chalk markings on the doorways from my church growing up with portions of prayers I found online and ritual work from Sister Karols Book of Spells, Blessings, and Folk Magic.

Honoring the Spirits of the Home

Shamanism is a way of perceiving the nature of the universe in a way that incorporates the normally invisible world where the spirits of all material things dwell. Shamans have different terms and phrases for the unseen world, but most of them clearly imply that it is the realm where the spirits of the land, animals, ancestors, and other spiritual entities dwell. Spirit encompasses all the immaterial forms of life energy that surround us. We are woven together into a net of life energies that are all around us. These energies can appear to us in different forms, such as spirits of the land or spirits of the home. Spirits of the home are the spirits that inhabit our place of refuge: where we live, where we work and where we play. These kinds of spirits share our homes with us and help us in our times of need.

Honoring the spirits that share our homes is important for our well-being. House spirits in many ways are the heart of the house itself and can affect the home's atmosphere as well as influencing the occupant’s moods and physical health. All homes have spirits, and in many cases there are layers of spirits. Spirits of the home are the echoes of people, of events, of ideas which have become imprinted upon a location, for better or for worse. House spirits may manifest as vague feelings or impressions associated with an area, but more often they appear with a clear physical form. Spirits of the home may be the manifestation of a home's spirit or they may be a spirit that is strongly tied to a home, but either way they have the ability to influence a person or family's luck, health, and mood. Most homes will have several different spirits associated with them, usually at least one with the home itself and in homes with an attached yard possibly more.

Honoring the spirits of a home is much easier than most people realize. It requires being open and aware of their presence without judgment or expectation. Know that the spirits are there and acknowledge their presence. Be respectful of them in word and action. Here are some good ways to honor the spirits of your home:

Cleanse Your Home

Honoring the spirits of your home begins with cleansing your abode. Your house holds the energies of all your emotional ups and downs. It collects the energies of all of your houseguests, domestic disputes, family emergencies, holidays, and so on. Picking up negative energy that is not ours can make us less balanced and can cause blockages to the natural flow of energy in our body. We may feel tired, unbalanced, anxious, depressed or even sick. The most important thing you can do is to smudge yourself and your home each day. Smudging is a method of using smoke from burning herbs to dispel negative energy. Sage, cedar and sweetgrass are traditionally used for smudging. To smudge, light the dried herbs in a fire-resistant receptacle, and then blow out the flames. Then use a feather or your hands to fan the smoke around your body and home. I recommend cracking a window or door for ventilation and for releasing unwanted energies.

Bless Your Home

Blessing a home, similar to cleansing one, is merely working to keep certain energies flowing within the house. We perform blessings on our homes to attract harmony, happiness, and prosperity to our dwelling and that can be done as often as we feel the need to. Many shamanic practitioners recommend the use of holy or consecrated water for blessing a home. The practice of charging water with intention, words, and sound is widely practiced in indigenous cultures throughout the world. In fact, people have believed in our ability to influence water since the days of antiquity. The Christian tradition is the obvious example, with the ongoing performing of rituals that turn regular water into holy water. Essentially, holy water is water with salt added during a rite of blessing. Learn how to make your own consecrated water, and use it for cleansing, protection and blessing. Pour some holy water into a spray bottle. To bless and protect your home, spray holy water around the perimeter of your dwelling and yard. You can also incorporate an incantation or spoken prayer into your blessing. This can be as simple as saying, "I bless this home with happiness. I bless this home with love. I bless this home with prosperity…"

Make Offerings to the Spirits

Offerings are a beautiful way to acknowledge and honor your household spirits. Giving and receiving are an essential part of any relationship. Anything can be used as an offering, but food is common in many cultures across the world. A simple way to incorporate food as an offering is to simply leave a portion of your meal for the spirits near the hearth or on an altar. An altar is any structure upon which we place offerings and sacred objects that have spiritual or cosmological significance. It represents the center and axis of your sacred space. A simple altar can be created with a cloth, a candle and other symbols that mean something to you. Offerings can be made weekly, monthly or annually and might include fresh flowers, herbs, incense, fruits, milk, or wine. The offerings serve as an acknowledgement and sign of gratitude for the spirits presence and beneficial activity.

Listen to the Spirits

Developing a relationship with your house and its spirit is very important for your home is your sanctuary; it keeps you safe and warm and protected from the elements. Let your home speak to you. As shamanic practitioners, we are often able to hear things that others cannot. And we know that it is not uncommon for spirits to speak up when they want something specific. Our houses can be the same way. Take some time to sit quietly in your house and listen to it. Be open to communication and let it tell you what color walls it was happiest with, what kind of music it prefers, or what holiday traditions it was fondest of; and let these messages guide your offerings.

As with any relationship it takes time and effort to build a connection with your house spirit, but it is worthwhile. Most home spirits are more open to human connection than the spirits of the land. Keep in mind that spirits choose to come into relationship with the person seeking. You can seek a connection, but the spirits must choose. Respect and connection to spirits is what makes for an authentic relationship, which is what the shamanic practitioner yearns for in a society that has severed itself from nature and spirit. Humans have lost touch with the spirit world and the wisdom of inner knowing. The spirits, however, have not forgotten us. They are calling us to a path of environmental sanity, to rejoining the miraculous cycle of nature.

Hi there! That is a great question, I think you might find the answer quite fascinating!

First of all, congratulations on moving in! And thank you so much for taking the time to read my content, it really means a lot to me when people tell me they enjoy it. Now, house blessing is a broad topic when it comes to witchcraft and other such practices, and the possibilities are endless.

I'll start off with just a few personal tips, and then get down to more specific, detailed rituals! The first step I would suggest is to cleanse this new space that you'll be living in for years to come. This can be done using incense, resin smoke, or even simmer pots. If I were in your situation, I would probably light a few incense sticks and parade them around the house so as to cleanse every single room using its smoke. Another common cleansing method when it comes to the home is to sweep a broom around, cleaning the floors symbolically. It's also possible for you to recite a chant/song as you do so, asking for the home spirits to welcome you in this new house! You could look one up online or write one down, so as to tailor it specifically to your own wishes. This is an example of a great house blessing chant, which I found on this page! Bless the candle that stands by itself, Bless the book on the mantle shelf, Bless the pillow for the tired head, Bless the hearth and the light shed. As a witch, something I like to do during ritual sweeping is to tie bundles of protective herbs as well as bells to the broom. Bells are a common cleansing tool.

The author Arin Murphy-Hiscock, who wrote The House Witch, advises new homeowners to take a moment to contemplate which part of their house feels like the heart of the home. The spiritual "center" of the house, so to speak. Oftentimes, people will choose the hearth or the kitchen, which provided heat to the household throughout history. But you could choose any room, or even any object which truly feels like the heart of the house. Once you've determined this "spiritual hearth", you can bless it using Murphy's method, which requires you to prepare: a bowl of salt, a bowl of water, a bowl of oil, a bowl filled with a blend of spices, a candle, and the means to light one.

Standing before this spiritual hearth, take 3 deep and slow breaths in order to calm your body and mind and to focus solely on the present moment."

Open your eyes and hold your hands out to the "hearth" you've chosen and say: Heart of my home, I recognize you. My spirit feels your warmth. My soul feels your wisdom. Sacred hearth, I recognize you.

Bow to the heart of the home.

Dip your fingers into a bowl of salt and say: Sacred hearth, the earth of my home recogizes your sanctity. Flick your fingers to scatter salt toward and over the hearth area.

Repeat using water, and say: Sacred hearth, the water of my home recognizes your sanctity.

Dip your fingers in a blend of spices and stir so as to release their scent, then say: Sacred hearth, the air of my home recognizes your sanctity. Waft your hand over the bowl of spices to move the scented air towards the hearth.

Light the candle and hold it toward the hearth, saying: Sacred hearth, the fire of my home recognizes you.

Place the candle on, or next to the spiritual hearth, and recite: Sacred hearth, I honor the sacred fire that burns within you. I thank you for the wisdom, knowledge and power that you will bring to this new home. May your sacred flame burn forever, and may my home ever be blessed by it.

Dip a finger into the oil, saying: Sacred hearth, with this oil I mark you as a symbol of our recognition of your sanctity and our gratitude for your many gifts and blessing. Lightly touch your oil-damp fingertip to the hearth.

Bow to the hearth one last time, and leave the candle burning if you mean to work in the room afterwards. Otherwis, snuff it out.

How To Use Floor Washes.

In this post I'll be speaking on the us of floor washes. Now in the south (New Orleans) we use this quite often and I'm going to teach you how we do it here.

Strating with Herb Baths it can be used as floor washes to cleanse your home, to draw in positive influences and to protect your space. Cleansing your home with a floor wash is one of the most traditional and effective ways to get rid of curses (negative energy) and clear the house of any powders that have been sprinkled, doesn't get rid of of any dark spirits or entities that may be present just energies or build up spirit residue.) Burning some sage just isn't enough to clear away all these influences. What you need is to wash that floor, the old fashioned way. It's also common to cleanse your home with a floor wash immediately after taking a magical bath so that both your body and your home are cleansed and protected.

How to Cleanse Your Home With a Floor Wash:

Make Your Wash. First I would start by if your useing premade wash then skip this part.ajd add it to your bucket.

Start by taking your choice of of herb bath and emptying the packet into a coffee cup. Pour boiling water over the herbs and allow them to sit for about ten minutes so that the herbs can release their essences into the water. After ten minutes, strain the herbs out and save the liquid. You can dispose of the herbs in the trash.

2. Cleanse Your Home. Cleanse your home from the back of the house to the front or if you have more then one floor top to bottom. Use a mop on tile, cement and wooden floors. If you have carpet then use a clean broom and lightly moisten the tips of the broom straws with the floor wash and use this to "sweep" the carpet.

Another option is that you can put some of the floor wash into a spray bottle and lightly spray the carpet. You can use a cloth moistened with floor wash to wipe down the base boards, doors, window sills, and thresholds of every room. Make your way to the front door of your home. While you clean you can pray in your own words, or if you'd like you can pray Psalms 23 or a selected psalm of your choice.

When you reach the front door, cleanse the door step or porch very well making sure to cleanse under the doormat.

3. Cleanse the Front Door. Using a moistened cloth, thoroughly wipe down the front door of your home, inside and out, using your floor wash. As you wipe the door, pray for it to be a portal for goodness into your home. You can anoint the front door with small crosses drawn in a condition oil I use Holly Water.

4. Dispose of the Floor Wash. Now that your home cleansing is complete, take the used bucket of floor wash out to the street with an "AMEN!"

Protecting and Anointing the Home. It is typically a good idea to go through your home after you've washed it. Go through and anoint and bless all the doors and windows. Select your oil, Holy Oil. Holly Water etc. and then dab a tiny cross onto the four corners and center of every door and window in your home. As you anoint the doors and windows pray in your own words for God to bring positive blessings into your home and into your life. This is very similar to the body anointing you perform after taking a personal magical bath.

Remember put all your thoughts and energy into it ask your spirit guides or ansestors for help.

odd post but this is for my high church girls: I've had a really horrible two weeks and think I am finally coming out of it and am thinking of a house blessing through a pastor. Has anyone gotten that done before? i currently am not connected to a church in this town but I am lutheran, and would be fine with a catholic priest doing it if I had to. Anybody?
