I’m four shots deep
The other thing I am not over from Our Flag Means Death!
The natives! From when the ship runs aground and they get captured! The second I saw the people wearing face paint and the ominous set up I thought "oh great another piece of pirate media where the native population of the Caribbean is depicted as savages and cannibals. Great. "
BUT THEY DIDN'T DO THAT.
The natives (who would be likely be Arawak Indians, here, aka my fucking people, my fucking ancestors thank you VERY much) were rightfully suspicious, but they weren't cruel, and they were shown in a kind light!
They had a fair trial for interlopers! People became friends with Olu! They showed a woman feeding a baby! Do you get how much that humanizes these people? They showed a woman with a baby in a sling, feeding a kid in the middle of a small calm village. Because you know what? Many of the Arawak tribes were PEACEFUL! This is something actually historically accurate(to an extent. Without knowing the exact tribe they were basing this depiction on it's hard to say how close they were to the mark, but the costuming as well as the institution of a trial leans heavily towards a Taino group) that shows natives not as savages, not as stupid, but as rational thinking people who make friends and have families and care about their people and home.
AND THIS FUCKING PIRATE SHOW DISPLAYED THAT.
I am not joking when I say that this is what truly sold me on the show. You can throw gay shit at me all you want but actually showing the native peoples of the Caribbean in a positive light is so fucking rare and this stupid little show did that more easily than films with ten times the attention and budget. (Looking at you PotC).
