The blogger Chronicles: How to get shot by Street Style photogs
A lot of you style enthusiasts seemed to appreciate my tricks on preping for Fashion Week, I decided to share my tips on getting that coveted shot in your fave blogs.
Fashion Week has become one huge beauty pageant. The competitions are not swimwear and talent, but getting dressed and looking good. It's not about the models on the runways or the celebrities in the front rows, but show audience members, who now vie to be crowned the most stylish of them all.
Their judges are not some random football player, a news anchor, and a techno singer, but rather the street style photographers who will (or won't) take their pictures, and, later, the website commentators who will dissect every bangle, shade of lipstick, and clutch purse to cross their bodies.
Getting photographed for sites like Clin D'Oeil or Elle is a pure joy & an honor. And you can, too, even if you don’t have a ticket to a show and just want to walk around the Fashion Week venues to get your picture taken.
1. Less is more. I said it before and I'll say it once more. The runways love minimalism right now, but do pile on the accessories. Stack bracelets up to your armpit. Make sure they sparkle! Twirl with that Louis V on your shoulder! Stomp out in your Loubies! But keep everything else clean and uncluttered.
2. Don't wear all designer. We are in that recessionary age of closet shopping, where the cool thing to do is wear whatever you have lying around. Clothes look more interesting when taken out of context. So go ahead! Pair your Chanel 2.55 purse and with your fave worn out Zara boyfriend jeans to create balance.
3. Wear lipstick. Street-style queen, and Friday Fashion Insider, Harper's Bazaar editor Joanna Hillman swears by MAC's Lady Danger red shade. Make sure yours is a little orange-y neon, but not so orange-y neon that you look like you forgot to wipe the rave off your face from last night! Bold, vibrant lips are so much fun! Plus they complete any outfit!
4. Be very tall. Whether you are, like me, only 5'3 or you are naturally tall, wear high, high heels. Towering over people is a great way to get noticed. Just try to avoid heels that are so challenging they make you walk like a drunk person, if you actually want people to think you’re sophisticated.
5. Don't want to be photographed. Well, of course you want to be photographed, but if you make yourself too available, there’s no thrill in the chase for the photographers. Walk swiftly, with purpose: You have a fashion show to go to!!! And you don’t have time to preen for someone with a camera who — oh me? Stop for just a moment? Oh, okay. Oh, the necklace? Miss Cocotte, thanks. No, I can’t remember where the bangle is from. Another shot of the shoes? Walk back and toward you again.....
6. Pose. At all times. Not just when someone is taking your picture. Some of the best street style shots from Fashion Week are of people walking that aren’t posed, but are still posing, because anyone getting photographed by someone knows it’s happening and is going to try to look a certain way while it does. And if a photographer asks you to stop or walk toward them or jump, do it! Will you be attending #MFW24 next week? Come say hi if you see me! Who knows?! You might end up on my Concrete street styles ;)
