Posted @withrepost • @amrevmuseum #OnThisDay in 1777, General George Washington and his army were victorious at the Battle of Princeton.⁣ ⁣ However, one American casualty at the Battle of Princeton was General Hugh Mercer. Mercer was mortally wounded at the Battle and died nine days later on Jan. 12. His wounding was depicted in John Trumbull's painting The Death of General Mercer at the Battle of Princeton, January 3, 1777, which is part of Yale University Art Gallery's collection. The move, and the ensuing six-month encampment, would prove to be the turning point in the war.⁣ ⁣ William B. T. Trego's inspiration for his famous The March to Valley Forge, December 19, 1777 painting was a passage from Washington Irving’s Life of Washington: "Sad and dreary was the march to Valley Forge, uncheered by the recollection of any recent triumph. ... Switching to another kind of geekery, I made everyone indulge my #historynerd side & we visited the quite new @amrevmuseum & the site of the First Bank of the United States!! The museum was wonderful with great multimedia exhibits, helpful staff, & costumed historians. The jewel of their collection is Washington’s war tent, which he lived in for all the years of the Revolutionary War! No pics though bc that thing is old & fragile & can only be viewed in a theater. . . When friends heard I was headed to NYC, more than a few thought it was Hamilton-related. While I didn’t set off to do much Hamilton stuff this trip, I was delighted to cross his path unexpectedly. Slide 1 is the site of the bank he founded & slide 2 is the site of his old work place. Slide 6 is a missive from Washington to Congress penned by Hamilton during the war when he was GW’s aide-de-camp. It’s signed GW but the penmanship is AH’s. . . . Shoutout to these wonderful living historians at the @amrevmuseum, who were part of the museum’s Artificers & Makers event the weekend we visited. They answered so many of our weird burning questions about 18th century clothing (key phrase: “diaper butt”) & let @catherine wear this gorgeous, completely hand-sewn Continental Army coat. We obviously had to strike a pose. . . Oh and they were so into my Hamilton Blue Coat tunic. They stopped me to look at it, recognizing what it was supposed to be immediately, & loved all the details, especially the shape of the pocket flaps. So, @elhofferdesign, your Blue Coat tunic is historical tailor approved. 😁 . . . I obviously had a great time at the Museum of the American Revolution as it’s my fave time period in US history, but these women made it even better with their enthusiasm, patience, and expert knowledge. #FBF Some years ago, I had the truly wonderful experience of visiting Concord, a sleepy colonial town nestled into an autumn-washed forest. We walked past leaf-strewn trails & Emerson’s family home to the Concord River where a replica of the Old North Bridge spanned it. This place (along with Lexington), the birthplace of the U.S. Revolutionary War. . . #OnThisDay in 1775, a “shot heard around the world” was fired & the skirmishes at Lexington & Concord marked the start of warfare between the Americans & the British. In Concord, they met & exchanged fire over the bridge. The replica bridge stands where the original stood back then, and when we visited the @amrevmuseum in Philly, I was so excited to see a piece of the original bridge on display & to say OMG I’VE BEEN THERE!!! (And happy 2nd birthday to this lovely museum!) . . . Today is also my dear friend @traceyneithercott’s birthday!! Without her & her hospitality, I wouldn’t visited Concord or experienced the truly life-altering thing that are fresh & warmed apple cider donuts!! She also writes hauntingly beautiful books like her debut GRAY WOLF ISLAND. Y’all should check it out!
