Summary: Antone has heard tell of simpletons who fall into relationships without even realizing it, and have to be told they're dating a person. They, clearly, would never be so foolish. (And if they were, well, it was two people. That would trip anyone up, especially if said people were Ainsley and The Gap.) Warnings: none! Wordcount: 316

"So, are we, like... dating?"

"God, no!" Ainsley said immediately. They seemed disgusted by the idea. Antone tried to keep their expression even, fighting hard not to frown as their mood soured.

"Oh."

"I'm way too cool to ever bother with dating."

Well.

That seemed a bit less personal than Antone had taken it. Maybe this particular piece of the world didn't revolve around him, every now and then.

"The Gap is too, right, Gap?"

"You're so right, Ainsley!"

"And, like, our bond is way deeper than marriage, anyway, so I don't know why you'd want to bother with dating. I mean—" The Gap shot them a disapproving look "—I guess, if you wanted to, like, date someone else, like, whatever, but like, we don't bother with that romantic nonsense. So..."

Antone huffed, trying to rapidly sort his feelings on this. It was hard not to feel rejected, even with the declaration of their bond being "deeper than marriage" (they kept saying things like that, the both of them; Antone had no idea what to make of it). But... Antone didn't really want to date either of them? Some things about being in a relationship with them did sound nice, in a way Antone wouldn't admit on pain of death. But romance? With Ainsley?? and/or The Gap?? would just be weird.

"Very well," they settled on responding. He pointed his nose in the air, adding, "No one meets my romantic standards anyway, certainly not mere peasants." Definitely not these strange little halflings that had coerced him into friendship and that they found themself inexplicably fond of.

Ainsley smirked. The Gap threw up their fists, cheering like they had won something. Antone bit back a smile at their antics.

Even if they weren't dating, he was absolutely stuck with these peasants. And they were having a hard time remembering why they ever hadn't wanted to be.

Ainsley and The Gap are pronoun vampires. They absorb the pronouns of whoever they're close to the longest. It's why their pronouns were never specified when they first appeared, why they were referred to as they/them while hanging out with Slake, and why they're slowly becoming he/theys due to their proximity to Postminger.
