Okay so since I study mandarin in school, I never really learned by hsk levels so today I decided to go back and see if I was missing any vocabulary from hsk 1 and 2, so here’s the words from hsk 1 because I don’t want to type all the ones from 2 (30 ish)

本 běn origin/roots

分钟 fēnzhōng minute

后面 hòumiàn rear/behind/afterwards

里 lǐ inside/lining/interior/internal

水果 shuǐguǒ fruit

医院 yīyuàn hospital

住 zhù to live/to stay/to stop

about 1/3rd of HSK 1 characters I'm familiar with and could probably write from memory, another 1/3rd of them I can often recognize in writing, and another 1/3rd I need to work on, so good progress so far

I recognize a bunch of HSK 2 characters too

HSK 1 - 112 recognized or familiar - 37 unknown

HSK 2 - 56 recognized or familiar - 94 unknown

so I can probably read at least 168 Chinese characters so far

HSK 1:

Expressing Actions in Progress with 在 (zài)  and 正在 (zhèngzài)

HSK 2:

Expressing "even more" with 更 (gèng)

Superlative with 最 (zuì)

HSK 3:

Expressing “all along” with 一直 (yīzhí)

Expressing Simultaneous Tasks with 一边 (yībiān)

Expressing “both ... and  ...” with 又 (yòu)

Were you nervous taking the HSK1? And how much of a difference grammar wise was HSK2 from 1? 谢谢你 ❤️

I never took the HSK 1 test, I skipped straight to HSK 2— I wasn't super nervous about the content; however, I was nervous about the computer based test. I had only practiced the paper tests, thankfully, there wasn't much of a difference.

HSK 1 (150 words) → HSK 2 (+ 150 words)

If you feel confident in HSK 1, I'd recommend studying HSK 2 and just taking that. It will save you money because honestly, there isn't a big difficulty difference. I found that I studied a lot of the HSK 2 grammar while still in the "HSK 1 stage," to catch up I utilized the Chinese grammar wiki.

HSK 3 has an added writing portion, but the amount of vocabulary (+300) isn't a big deal— just the grammar is more difficult. For a bit of a timeline, I took the HSK 2 test in May then HSK 3 in January (which was supposed to be in November), studying practically every day in the summer and every weekend during school.

HSK 3 → HSK 4 (+300 words) doubles your vocabulary, now the difficulty is increasing

HSK 4 → HSK 5 (+1300 words)

HSK 5 → HSK 6 (+2500 words)

Good luck with whatever path you choose! If you feel more comfortable taking HSK 1 first, by all means do that.
