Reading in Chinese 🇨🇳

The year of horse I dedicate to books, reading in Chinese, improving my Chinese vocabulary (outside of academia*)! Since today you’ll see not only my study notes and tips, but also books recommendations, 阅读报告 🤓 

*Why I always mention “outside of academia”? The academic language and language used in novels differs! Just think how different it is to read an academic article in your native language and read a novel, or a poem. Different way of expressing, different vocabulary, different logic of the text!

Reading magazines (for kids) in Chinese can be humbling! A lot of 成语 and words I’d not hear in daily life - since a difference between 口语 (spoken language) and 书面语 (written language) exists! 

So if you try to switch from textbooks to magazines or books - give yourself some time to get used to the REAL Chinese!

Reading Chinese Books for Kids (vocab 2)

单果 (dānguǒ): simple fruit

无花果 (wúhuāguǒ): fig

子房发育 (zǐfáng fāyù): ovary development

果实 (guǒshí): fruit

浆果 (jiāngguǒ): berry

核果 (héguǒ): drupe (stone fruit)

梨果 (líguǒ): pome (e.g., pear, apple)

瓠果 (hùguǒ): pepo (type of berry, e.g., pumpkin, cucumber)

水蜜桃 (shuǐmìtáo): juicy peach; honey peach

皮革 (pígé): leather; (here: fruit skin) skin / peel

芳香气味 (fāngxiāng qìwèi): aromatic smell; fragrance

鲜嫩多汁 (xiān nèn duō zhī): fresh, tender and juicy

两枚种子 (liǎng méi zhǒngzi): two seeds

Reading Chinese Books for Kids (vocab 1)

千滋百味 (qiān zī bǎi wèi): a thousand flavors; all kinds of tastes

万物连接 (wànwù liánjiē): the connection of all things

饥肠辘辘 (jī cháng lù lù): stomach growling with hunger; very hungry

沉浸 (chénjìn): to immerse; immersed in

獾 (huān): badger

静谧 (jìngmì): quiet; still; tranquil

饿坏 (è huài): to be starving; very hungry

顾不上 (gù bù shàng): cannot attend to; have no time for

蔬菜铺 (shūcài pù): vegetable shop / stand

碰碰运气 (pèng pèng yùnqi): to try one's luck

时候尚早 (shíhou shàng zǎo): it's still early

树屋 (shùwū): tree house

琳琅满目 (lín láng mǎn mù): a feast for the eyes; an array of beautiful things

...被难住了 (bèi nán zhù le): to be stumped / puzzled (by a question)

我带你挑 (wǒ dài nǐ tiāo): I'll help you pick (some)

Books for kids in other languages will humble you 😩 so many words to learn!

Thank God there are holidays, I can visit my Chinese family and borrow some books from kids 📚

Content of Chinese books for kids is quite… HSK5/6 level, especially so many science words show up in these books! 🧬
