“It’s kind of you to do this off the clock,” Marlon said as he ushered Sam inside the Adventurer’s Guild. His eyebrows raised when Kendra trotted in behind him. “With an assistant, no less.”
Sam passed him the bag of Jojamart groceries that he was holding. “No problem! I know it’s hard for you both to travel in the snow, and it’s already starting to come down out there.”
Marlon set the bag behind him on the shop counter. When he turned to retrieve the smaller one clutched in Kendra’s hands, he saw that she was still in the doorway, wide eyes darting between all the weapons on display.
“It’s okay, Squirrel,” Sam encouraged his daughter with a gentle smile. “I’ve known these guys my whole life. They wouldn’t hurt you.”
Kendra didn’t look so sure about that. Still, she shuffled her way forward, keeping a protective distance from Marlon as she thrust the groceries in his direction.
Marlon bit back his laughter. Same shit, different kid; he was pretty sure he knew how to ease her mind. “Thank you very much, ma’am,” he said in an exaggeratedly professional tone of voice.
Kendra’s mouth twitched into a smile as she gave a timid, “You’re welcome,” in reply.
With the groceries all sorted, Marlon reached into his pocket for his wallet. He gave Sam the check he’d written for the delivery, then pulled out an extra couple of gold coins. “It wouldn’t be right to let you go without a tip, now, would it?” he said to Kendra.
Sam opened his mouth as though he was about to refuse on her behalf, but her delighted gasp cut him off. “For me? Really?”
“All yours.” Marlon dropped the coins into her expectant palms. “Unless your boss gets any wise ideas.”
Kendra’s “boss” didn’t try to object again as she immediately stuffed her spoils into her coat pocket. “Thank you, Mr. Marlon!” she bubbled. “I hope you enjoy your groceries!”
The pair soon left to beat the storm home, with Kendra gushing about how she planned to spend the money all the while. As soon as the door was shut, Gil laughed from his rocking chair. “Wasting all our money on bribery, huh?”
Marlon rolled his eyes. “We both know you would’ve done exactly the same thing if you weren’t pretending to be asleep.”
Gil didn’t dignify that accurate statement with a response.
